I don't know any offhand, but check the AKC breeder listings and the OESCA listings. Don't forget to ask questions and make sure they are reputable. We got our puppy in April, it's a nice time to get a puppy. June would also be nice, and if all the good breeders you talk to don't have any quite as soon as you like, they're definitely worth the wait |
flyerdiane wrote: We would like to get a puppy in the early spring. Most breeders seem to have puppies available in June, which is later than we want. Any suggestions as to where to get a puppy in the next few months from a reputable breeder? Might I ask why you think June is later than you want & early spring is better? I know alot of people base their time to get a puppy on when the weather is the best for housebreaking. I always remind them that when this dog is 12-13 years old they will probably be standing out in the snow & cold of winter or the heat of summer with it to help it get back into the house safely. A lot of people look at summertime because they are home more & kids are off school & there are more people in the family available during the day to help train the puppy. Mother Nature doesn't take these things into consideration when she times her girls heat cycles. You might be lucky enough to find a puppy from a reputable breeder that is ready to go in the early spring but those puppies would have to be born & on the ground now. Purchasing from a responsible, reputable breeder would give you better odds at a better temperment, structure & health than buying from someone who has puppies available at specific times of the year. I don't mean to sound harsh but I try remind people to look at the whole picture when buying a dog. |
Hey! I would have taken a June puppy. Sure would have beat standing in knee-deep snow in the middle of the night trying to housebreak Lyra! It was more important to us to get a great pup from a reputable breeder than to spend a few weeks being inconvenienced by the weather. Anyone wanting a great pup must compromise some comforts or conveniences. Otherwise they won't be very responsible dog owners. |
Puppies are not like a computer where you can order one and expect it to be delivered on a specific date or just go get one off the shelf. Nita is spot on - it should be far more important to be able to get a solid pup form a more solid breeder, even if that means you have to wait, (and we did wait for over a month for our last pup) or get one when it might be a little less convenient for you. A dog is a lifelong and life style commitment; it will and should take precedents over many aspects of your life. Marilyn is the person who steered us to our breeder who had us waiting and it was not only a great decision to do this, but we ended up with a friend out of getting in touch with Marilyn. She is now our show mentor and a great friend! Use everything the good Lord gave, (heart as well as brain) you when looking for a puppy and you'll likely end up with a good one that will be with you for years to come, bringing many laughs and smiles along for the ride!!! Good luck and keep us posted on how this all comes out. Vance |
June puppy sounds wonderful! I got lily in Dec and it was snowing. She loves the snow....It was easy to get her to go outside but getting her to come back in was the difficult part. lol |
If you're willing to wait, I'm sure a reputable breeder will have pups in the spring at some point. It might not be this year, but I'm sure it will happen sometime. |
I've gotten pups in January, February, March, July, August and September. Despite the snow, for me January was a grand time for new pups. No leaves, stones, sticks to attract inquisitive pups and by the time it thawed here, some of that mouthiness had passed. Though I did do a face plant in the snow once when pups got me tangled up in leashes in the wee hours of the morning. Have you gone through the OESCA list... or visited any dog shows or performance events to learn who might have pups arriving soon? If you don't find just the right breeder with a pup in your time frame, try to wait a little longer or continue your search to find the best OES for you and your family. It's easy to say this when someone already has an OES or several... more difficult when the home is empty or the heart has been broken over the loss of one of these wonderful companions. Been there and understand that completely. Good luck with your search and I hope you'll post again when you've found him/her... |
We want an early spring puppy, or a fall puppy, because my husband travels around the state on business. He has the capability of taking the puppy in the car with him. It's a great bonding experience. It is appropriate to take the puppy on the road during the heat of the summer. |
