Our breeder said our dogs would decide when they needed to skip lunch. Dexter decided he could do without at least one meal a day when he was around 8 months old though he has never been an enthusiastic eater. Winston would eat 8 meals a day if we would give it to him. Sometimes I would swear he can tell time. He wants breakfast at 6:30, lunch at 12:00, family outdoor playtime at 5:00 and supper at 6:00. He quits romping about 5:50 and comes up to us to make sure we are watching the time. I'm sure he would be impossible to be around if we started skipping lunch. He only gets the daily recommended amount and isn't fat so I don't see an issue with it. We offer 3 meals a day to Dexter but he usually only eats one; supper. |

We've always split the meals into 3 parts. Mulligan gets: 1 cup in the morning, 1/3 cup at lunch and 1 1/3 cups for dinner. I don't really know why we break it up exactly this way. |
Both of ours will regularly NOT eat one of their two normal meals. This will happen once or twice a week and then they go back on schedule for four or five days. This is always unpredictable and usually frustrating for us uprights... Vance |
Well, they are like us, some like or need to eat more often then others. My 3 girls get 1 cup of food for breakfast 5:00am and one cup for dinner 3:30 pm. They usually get a snack/treat around noon. Sometimes they will skip a meal, for that I don't worry, but if they skip more than one I get concerned. |
Yuki is one of those who would eat 8 meals a day too! She gets fed at 5 a.m. and again at 5 p.m. She has a ritual though that just started where she won't begin her meal until she's given water. Then ....it's meal time. Sometimes she gets just as excited about water as she does food. Strange girl. |
Tonks and Luna get 2 meals a day. Luna licks her bowl clean at both. Tonks will often just pick at her breakfast, leaving most of it until about lunchtime when she will go back for whatever she feels like eating at that point. I'm grateful that Luna knows to not eat Tonks' food through the day, so I can leave it down for Tonks to graze on. That's if the cats don't get to it first. |
Winston helps us put food in his dish then starts wolfing immediately. Dexter strolls in after he hears his food hit the dish (sometimes, he often has to be called/coaxed), looks around and at us as if to say "Are you sure this is ready?" Then slowly eats. Winston sits nearby ready to take over. As soon as Dexter's head raises, even for a breathe, Winston dives in as if he hasn't eaten in days. It s amazing how much he can get down before we can pull him away and he has to be pulled,we can't call him off the food dish. If Dexter isn't finished he will give Winston a warning growl if he comes too close which makes him move away immediately. |
Both mine eat twice a day once in the morning and once in the evening. About an hour before dinner and periodically through the day Buster will lick his bowl, in anticipation for dinner. Both eat their dinner in 10 seconds flat. No grazing in this house. Monty came to us at 14 weeks as a grazer but within two days became a wolfer otherwise Buster would eat his left overs, Buster is not as polite as Luna. That Newfy would never stop eating given the chance. |
I don't see where splitting the daily food into several or a couple feedings would really matter for most dogs. As long as the amount in the day is sufficient (and not over sufficient!), it truly wouldn't matter. Feeding once a day is mostly a bloat risk, otherwise dogs would do OK that way too. Our adults get twice daily feedings. Maggie the coonhound is our nibbler, and especially is not a morning dog. She would rather sleep in, and for sure is not ready to eat. But she is the Queen B.....and no one touches her food. |
All three of our girls are grazers and they end up having access to kibble 24 a day. Their weight is holding steady at a good level. They are princesses. I tell them to think about all the stray and neglected dogs out there who would be lucky to get regular healthy meals... |
Oscar gets four meals a day. Yes, you read that right. FOUR. Isn't he the luckiest dog ever? He gets four small meals, because of all of the meds he takes. Some drugs are to be taken every 12 hours, and some are every 8 hours, plus we feed an additional small meal at 9 pm to keep food moving through his delicate system. Laurie and Oscar |
after puppy/jounior stage, I give two a day this help to stop gases building up in the stomach which can lead to a stomach torstion (stomach twist) I dont not feed 1 hr before or 1hr after walking, this is what i was advised by my vet after my 3rd sheepie had a stomach Torstion , but after her S/torstion we was advised to give her 3/4 small meals a day, which we did |
One meal a day when I get home from work. The get a chicken foot when they wake up right now, which are kept in the freezer in the garage. They wake up and wait by the door. Not sure what is going to happen when the bag of feet are done. Some pretty sad dogs. Hopefully I can find another local farmer. |
Brick gets 2 meals a day. Cup and a half at 6 AM on weekdays (or around 8 AM on weekends), and a cup and a half at 6 PM. |
