1. Am feeding him on Royal Canin, can someone tell me how much and how often I should be feeding him? The instructions on the bag arent very clear ? 2. He has just started going out for walks and every so often he will stop in front of me and jump up for a cuddle, wimper a little and look reassurance, which I do, not aware that anything is frightened him, then he walks on for another wee while. He can do this quite early on in the walk so dont think he can be tired. Any ideas ? 3. Nipping and mouthing ? Sometimes when playing or training hell either get bored or over exited and start to mouth or bite us so I give him toy to chew but soon gets bored and comes back to have a bite at me or my daughter. Help ? |

Has he had his jabs before taking out in the big wide world. He can run around in the garden but in a park keep in on a lead as his hips need to settle in. Dog classes would be a good idea and when he jumps up put your hand towards him and push him down and say know in a firm voice. You need to be firm about the biting and you need to be the leader or he will run all over you. He is a pup and will chew as his teeth are growing. Few others might have more advice. A toy which maks a noise and ball on a rope which he can chase. Don't play tug with him yet as I have seen jaws been dislodge due to tuggy game |
13 weeks can be young for long walks. And as Parwaz mentioned, can be unsafe unless he's had his last round of shots (namely his parvo one). I recall waiting at least until we were past our last vaccinations at 4 months before exploring the world- and walking on leash was a while after that as well. |
Hi, thanks for the replies, yes hes had all his injections so is safe to go for walks, before that he was only out in the garden, i have no other dogs. As for the biting, yes I realise pups will be pups and he might grow out of it , but also realise my baby bo is going to be a big bo one day soon. Ive tried to give him a chew toy always give him a firm NO. Tried yelping and leaving him to chill out, which works sometimes but soon after hell start again ? I just want to get things right, other than that, hes just the most loving dog ever. Any advice on the feeding ? Thanks, Susan |
your vet should be able to help you with feeding guidelines, and your breeder too. I remember feeding three times a day (I think) but not how much. I found with the biting and nipping that the yelping and time outs worked really well. Please be patient; your pup is a baby and not going to learn as fast as we'd think they would or like. Have you tried reading any puppy books? I know I always say this, but I'm a reader and love turning to a book when I have questions. I found Puppies for Dummys was much more helpful than I ever expected it to be. I especially liked that I could use the index to find exactly what I was looking for, rather than having to read chapter after chapter to get to a certain subject. |
I would also encourage NOT trying to reassure him when he displays wimpy behaviour... or any unwanted behaviour... by coddling him when he shows fear or uncertainty in any situation you're only teaching him he is right to be afraid and it can create a nightmare of a neurotic dog. |
I asked my vet lots of questions on first visit think he was maybe having an off day because he wasnt very helpful. So ive been talking to lots of other dog owners however their dogs are older and cant recall the puppy stage too well and trawling the internet, but got to the point where Ive bombarded myself with too much and sometimes confilicting information thats why Im here ! Im now confused about where the text book stuff starts and stops and how much you can allow and accept a pup for who he is ? I know its my responsibility to be a responsible owner and mould him into a good dog I just dont want to let him down ! Am looking into finding a local training class which hopefully should help. Any more advice would be appreciated, thanks again, Susan |
How much does he weigh? We fed three times a day at that age and I think 1/2 cup at each feeding? Not sure and depends what you feed. Some food companies give you the guidelines but its always too much food I found. Too much food will cause loose stool sometimes. Ask the Vet how many calories a pup this age needs and then read the caloric intake on the bag per cup. And split the total three ways so he gets fed in the am and lunch and pm. If you feed at the same time every day, you will know when he has to go and that will help with the housebreaking. The nipping is a pain. His teeth hurt as they come in. Take a wash cloth, sort of wring in and wet it and put it in the freezer to freeze. Then let him have it. The coldness will help his gums feel better and it will get softer. But keep an eye on him. You don't want him to actually eat the washcloth! Read lots in this forum by searching "nipping" and there will be lots and lots of posts. You joined a great place. Everyone here has OES and has been through what you will be going through. |
Diane, thanks for advice facecloth in freezer ! Bo weighs 7kg and feeding him Royal Canin for medium dogs, 3 feeds a day and 3 handfuls at each feed. Im also walking him between a 20 - 30 minute walk , between 3 and four times a day. After morning, lunch and evening feeds. Is this too much, have read not to walk too much because of damage to bones and also read needs lots of exercise. Could that be why he stops now and again during walks is it too much ? em .... Confused.com ??? Sorry, so many questions, Regards, Susan |
We only took Monty out once a day for a on leash walk for 30 mins then run around in the back yard when he wanted. At 5 months we started doing 40 mins to an hour walk a day with a lot of off leash. Now we do 40 mins to an hour and a half. They have something to look forward to if you do it once or twice a day, 4 times may be over kill Also we were told by our Newfy breeder not to walk the dog half an hour before or after dinner because it might increase the chance of bloat. I don't like to walk them after dinner as I find they want to relax and nap. I would also not encourage the jumping up for cuddles and reassurance as this would get annoying when he is a big dog and you don't want him to become dependent on it. When you find out what calorie intake he needs, the label on you dog bag will let you know how many calories in a cup of food. At 14 weeks we were feeding two cups in the morning and two in the evening of Acana puppy. Now we still feed the same amount at 19 months but use NOW brand. Monty has always had a fit ribby feel to his chest. We fed twice a day rather than three as we also have a older dog who ate twice a day so it was easier. You may need more or less food it is hard to know exactly what to tell you. We were equally worried that we were not feeding him enough or too much. We just looked for signs such as if he was begging for food between dinners and doing the rib test - running your hands along the ribs making sure you can feel them easily. |
Thankyou so much for the advice anid taking the time to reply, I live in scotland so not sure your time but Bo was getting a bath and tends to go a little crazy after bath time ! Nice clean mad doggy ! Cant figure what hes doing on walks i know hes enjoying his walk, tail wags constantly and hes fascinated with everything, loves meeting all the other dogs in the park, yet has these moments when wimpers as if unsettled about something, he doesnt always jump up sometimes he just stops in front of me for reassurance or something ?? clap him tell him hes good boy, then happily carries on with his walk ? As for biting well, lets just say I was not his favourite mama after bath so have enrolled us both in training classes. Together we will survive the puppy years Susan |

Help ? hi there 1 Bo should be on Royal Cannin MAXI Jounior for our breed (http://www.ROYALCANIN.co.uk at 13 weeks 4 small meals a day then change to 3 then to 2meal a day for life (we feed our dogs on ROYAL CANIN ) it is one of the best dog foods 2 for walking 5 mins there and 5 mins back increseing very slowly, you do not wont to put the hips out, i always remind people you would not walk your baby/toddler for 20 /30 mins 3 training needs to be short oes do get fed up very quick, training class would be best as each trainer has there own way to deal with this which country do you live , we live in uk |

I know most will tell you not to wash too often, but I'll openly admit to washing my girls quite a lot in those first months. Seems that siblings like to wrestle, and wrestle in the dirtiest places. One of mine also liked to roll in poop - her own or others- it just seemed there was ALWAYS a reason to bathe them! I bathed at least once a week, sometimes more. If anything, my girls became very comfortable with bath time, and will now hop happily into the tub if I ask them. I did however always make sure they were dry after, even setting a portable heater up near them (restricting their access to it, mind you) to make sure they wouldn't chill if I wasn't blowing them dry. Puppy coats are MUCH more forgiving than adult ones, and rarely matted up those first few months. I'd just suggest using a gentle shampoo; some are even formulated for more regular washings and shorter in-between washing intervals. And make very sure to get all the shampoo out- I find that OES coats seem to hold onto the stuff! |
