eye problems- any advice

Hi, new to posting but have been reading for months.
I must say you are a great bunch of OES owners with a wealth of knowledge!

This is our second OES, we just rescued him on Dec. 1st. His name is Dulux, named after the paint. They estimate him to be 1 1/2 to 2 years old.

Just this week he has developed an eye issue and I am scared to death for him!
On Wed. we noticed his left eye was red, weeping a bit, he was rubbing it and it was sensitive to touch. He was blinking and squinting too. His inner eyelid was swollen and red too. We took him to the vet that day and they didn't see any scratch on his eyeball, looked at his eye ball and it seemed ok, finger checked his orbital bone for a crack- did all the routine things. She gave us antibiotic eye drops and then pills for pain and swelling. The vet ruled out allergies as it is only in one eye.

Thursday it stayed the same, no better no worse.

Now it is Friday and it has gotten worse. The inside corner of his eye, closest to his nose- the inside eyelid/membrane is all red and swollen and goes over his blue coloured part about half way.
The vet opens at 8:30 and we are going over hoping they can see Dulux again.

I have been looking online and not sure what to compare it to. There is something called cherry eye but that has a bulging red lump and Dulux's eye problem doesn't bulge out.

Have any of you had this kind of problem? I am so worried about him. Please advise if you have any suggestions.
thanks in advance

Poor Dulux, I would be frightened too. Not to mention the pain he is enduring? Sorry, no answers or even guesses for you about his condition. Just hoping that your appt today yields better results.

He will need a thorough opthamological exam. Eyes can be complicated.

He may have some sort of congential condition like entropian. Or it may be an infection that is not responding to the antibiotics. Good luck and please let us know what happens.

Are you from the UK or Aus??? Just wondered because of his name.
Thanks for your replies, I am from Canada actually. He was a rescue dog and his foster family had friends from the UK and that is where we got his name. We kept the name as it is a cute name and we have Dulux paint here in Canada. (but not the TV ads)

After a vet saw him again today, she also ruled out many of the problems the first vet ruled out. And said it's not cherry eye.
All of that is positive! No damage to his actual eye ball either.

She said she thinks that his upper eye lid and eye brow area has an infection inside the skin. It is a fluid filled area that is swelling and pushing his eye ball into a different place in the eye socket. She has given an oral antibiotic as well as keeping him on the topical ointment and the pain/anti-inflammatory pills.

He had his pills at lunch and has now vomited, and I have called the vet again. They said see how he does with another pill tonight and if he vomits again to take him back to the vet in the AM.

This is so scary! His eye looks so bad I can barely look at him without crying myself!
He is new to us- adopted him on Dec. 1st (we made that his birthday since he is a rescue and they have no history on him) and this is his first health problem.
Other than some food aggression that is slowly becoming evident, he is an amazing dog! He is deaf and always wants us in view. So sweet!

Will let you know if his eye gets better this weekend and what the vet says at our follow up appt. on Monday or Tuesday.

Again, thanks for your input!
Poor boy.
Keep us posted and good luck!! :crossed:

Welcome to the forum.
Had to put Dulux in his crate when I went out for an hour tonight. After sleeping all day and night for days, the minute I let him out of his crate, he has the energy of a healthy dog again. Not the best thing at bedtime but great to see him running around and playing with his toys. He is even shaking his stuffed toys in his mouth and shaking his head. Let's hope he is on the mend.

Unfortunately his eye still looks the same, maybe even a bit redder tonight. Taking it hour by hour and hope the antibiotics start working and he is like his regular self in no time!
He is once again full of energy this AM. The redness in his eye has calmed down a bit.
Happy to see it is improving and not getting worse again!

Good news, I hope that the improvement continues. You said you are in Canada. I am in Ottawa, are you anywhere close?
Yay for Dulux!!! I hope he keeps getting betterer and betterer!
Did you take any pictures? It would be good to show what you are seeing, if possible.

Welcome to the forum, I'm glad you're here. And thank you for rescuing Dulux!!!
Kim- Near London area so a little bit away from Ottawa.
Ron- I do have a photo, should I post it in this forum? It's the best photo we could get as he wasn't too cooperative.

This is our second OES, and first rescue. Dulux has some food aggression issues that we are working with. Just this week it has become WAY worse but I am hoping it is because he is not feeling well with his eye.
He bit me today while feeding him, thank goodness we started putting on gloves this week. I still have tons of bite marks and bruises through the gloves.

Other than that he is a super dog, so cute and always wants to be with us. He is deaf too which is making training difficult with hand signs. Some he has mastered, others-not so much.
Thanks for the welcome!
I'm sorry about his eye, hoping it continues to improve.

For the food aggression, have you tried hand feeding him. One piece of food at a time. After a few days of this, hold the dish while he eats. If he growls or something go back to hand feeding. Once you get to holding the dish and he's eating from it...take it away, and give it back, and take it away etc for several days.

This cured my 8wk old puppy. Its time consuming but it worked for me.

I know there are books about training deaf dogs. Have you tried any of those?

That's great - hope he gets well soon! :crossed: :hearts:
Thanks everybody for your help and well wishes!

Just back from the follow up, follow up appt. His eye looks great and called what he had cellulitis- an infection in the tissue. Could be from a scratch/ cut etc. There was no sign of a scratch but he is always hitting his head into things so might be from impact. We have the hair around his eyes trimmed so he can see but being deaf, he is very visual and the slightest movement makes him turn his head (sometimes very quickly) and he frequently bonks his head on the door ways, table legs etc.

Anyway they did his vaccines too and micro chipped him since he was a rescue and nothing other than rabies had been given to him. So he is all set and his eye is healthy and he is back to being a crazy OES!

Thanks again

Here is a link to photos of Dulux and a photo of his eyelid infection, which thankfully is all better now.
Glad to hear that Dulux is on the mend and doing better!
That's really good news that he's doing better! It looked ouchie.
