That poor old boy |
poor guy, that breaks my heart!! |
oh poor muppet. |
He looks so sad. Does Madeline know about him? |
ooooohhhhhhh poor baby boy |
So sad...to be abandoned at 11. Hope someone finds it in their hears to take him. |
Mark, I did write Madeline. She said this shelter won't work with rescue. Hopefully the "10 years and older" applies for this ol' boy and someone will be willing to give him a soft bed and loving home. Quote: https://www.yourspca.org/sslpage.aspx?pid=343#fees -Dogs 10 years and older: Adoption Fee Waived; as with all animals, adoption approval required -Most Dogs 7 years and older: $100 -Most Dogs/Pups 21 weeks - 6 years : $135 -Most Pups 20 weeks and younger: $200 (price includes bordetella vaccination) -Particular purebreds and/or smaller sizes: Special prices in effect ($200 - $350) |
This made me have to hug my sheepie. I don't understand why the shelter wouldn't work with a rescue. Especially one that could find him a specific home for his old sheepie man needs or at least foster the poor old guy til the right person is found. He shouldn't be sitting in a tiny kennel at his age. Is it because they are giving him away for free? |
That's reverse logic, though. According to their own website, any dog over 10 is free. If they're going to give him away for free, then just give him to a rescue. |

There is a great degree of variation of what constitutes "rescue"; not all are reputable/trustworthy (not talking most breed rescues, and certainly not OES) and some shelters have been burned. Also, many times shelters don't want to give up an apparent purebred dog as there are so few of them and so they can charge more - though given his age that's clearly not the case here (the ones locally who work this way usually usually only call us if the dog has health or temperament problems or is geriatric) So presume the former. I worked with Madeline going on fifteen years ago now and pulled a number of dogs from shelters for her all over upstate NY - she's worked hard to cultivate those relationships for decades. So if this particular shelter won't work with rescue they're probably entrenched in that policy and not much can be done. The other option is for someone localish to adopt him. Any takers? Kristine |
Couldn't Madeline just go adopt him? And then put him into rescue? I don't know all the intricacies of these types of operations (pulling a dog for rescue or adopting), but I can't imagine it's overly complicated or restrictive. If I could take in another dog, I would go & get him. |
What a poor sad looking boy. "Rescue" is an extremely flexible term in Canada, I'd expect it's similar in the US. Completely unregulated, virtually anyone can claim to be a "rescue". There's currently a woman in Toronto who is in jail for strangling a dog, and she has been convicted in past years for harming dogs, and this lady runs a "rescue". http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/crime/a ... enied-bail When dealing with rescues, you need to use the same critical eye that you would use when looking at breeders. There are wonderful rescues and wonderful breeders, there are terrible rescues and breeders as well. |
I certainly hope somebody adopts him before the shelter deems his time is up. Too bad can't get him on a transport to Minnesota. I can't imagine WHY someone would give him up at his age??!! Poor little boy! |
There can be lots of reasons...some more valid to most of us than others. My basset Harley came into rescue and fostering with us when he was 11.5 yrs old. I imagined we would be giving him a home for a year or so, given his age. Well that was 3.5 years ago, he will be a happy and healthy 15 yrs old in March!! |
You're awesome Dawn! I wish I lived closer as I'd go snap him up - my heart has always belonged to aged animals. I understand completely the mind set behind being able to trust rescues as some well meaning souls have had their reps at stake by being affiliated with some which turned out to be hoarders. Still, it breaks my heart that this beautiful soul is there because of politics. Any update on this boy? |
Ohh I just checked and it says he's no longer available. I'm praying his outcome was good. |
