Back to the vet we go

Had to make an unexpected trip to the vet today.

Brick was outside earlier and the bag came off his leg. He must've been bounding thru some of the deaper snow. That bounding pulled the bag off and opened up his suture site.
So to the vet we go.
They cleaned it up and glued the cut. The vet said it was very superficial and that it looks like one of the stitches came out.
They then put an old IV bag over his foot & lower leg and tied it off with some tubing. Real high tech.
I asked if there was a numbing ointment I could put on the site but they had no suggestions. I will look when I go to the store lately. I WILL put something on there. Now that the site is scabbing up, it's driving him nuts. He keeps trying to get to the site and is very whiney and angry.

Now I have to monitor him when he goes outside. Like I have time for that at 5:45 in the morning in the middle of the winter before I go to work.

Sigh.

Bet that spot itches and tugs a bit. Numbing stuff might get on his mouth....oh that could be fun. Wrapping with vet tape....sticky adhesive and adding something he doesn't like over the top.....lemon, vicks vapor rub....might keep his nose from there.

Snow will be difficult as it rubs whatever is on the leg.....the IV bag is curious....slippery to repel snow. I was thinking about the whole body rain suits......could you fashion some pants for him?
He wears the big cone, so that will prevent his mouth from getting near the site. That's why I'm thinking a numbing ointment would be helpful.
I didn't know they made full rain suits for real sized dogs. At the very least, I don't think they're available at the local pet store.

It's been a little above freezing during the day and below freezing at night so the snow is kinda crusty now.
I was contemplating snow blowing the yard but I don't want to damage the yard.
You are right, I'm not sure they make full size rain suits. I see show dogs in them but don't know $$ or availabiliy. Glad he's in the Cone of Shame, that will help. You might consider switching to a soft cone for future adventures. Jack sheepdog really settled down once we had him in the softie.....we used the inflatable doughnut around the neck. Couldn't find a soft cone to fit him....but all it would have solved is our shins, not his fear of tunnel vision.
I have an inflatable soft collar (neck donut thingie) and it sucks. It doesn't protect any part of him from his mouth. His head and snout are too long for the average protection devices.
Have you tried the Comfy Cone? That donught thing didn't work for us either but the Comfy Cone did. You can get at petCo...Hope Brick feels better. I know when I have a healing scab, the itching can drive me crazy. Poor Brick...can you put an ointment on it like cortizone cream or some kind of anti itch?
Diane,
I posed that exact question to my vet and they didn't have a suggestion.
I'm going to the drug store tomorrow and will speak to a pharmacist to see if there is an ointment I can use that will numb, cool, and soothe.
He HAS to get some relief.

I was out for a bit this evening and when I came home, I noticed he got the IV bag off his foot. He tore it so I can't reuse it.
He's been trying to get to it so badly that he's cracked the cone.
I'm thinking he may need a babysitter when I'm at work so that he doesn't hurt himself.
Bactine spray?
Mark

Solarcaine is what we use. It has a cooling and numbing agent in it. The vet swears by it.

Lisa Frankie and Mattie
The vet said the sprays are OK, as long as they don't have any alcohol in them.
Alcohol will sting/burn and dry out.
Poor Brick. You also want to avoid any topical with cortisone in it. The steroid will prevent healing.

Have you tried the tube sock cover I mentioned in the original thread? It works great at keeping the site clean, as well as keeping the bandage in place underneath. Oscar heals really well with this method. Plus, it enables me to let Oscar out of his Cone Of Silence.

Laurie and Oscar
Laurie,
I didn't try the tube sock.

I've been giving him Benadryl in his breakfast and 2 hours before bed.
Also, I've been putting Neosporin w/pain reliever on the site.
Both things seemed to really help.
