For the last few days, out of the blue, she holds her head, says the room is spinning, and lays down. She always asks for a cold rag for her forehead. She also had to get glasses this past summer, and my niece thought it was her eyes causing the problem. She made an appt with the eye doctor, and they said - No, glasses were fine. They went straight from there to the pediatrition. They have made an appt with a neurologist at Children's in Columbus, just to be sure, but the doctor is pretty sure of his dx. Anyone know more about this? Of course, we are very concerned. Our POOR Laynie Bug. |

My 85 year old father had an episode of vertigo recently which nessitated an trip to the ER as I didn't know what it was. When an old person talks about dizziness and unsteady on his feet, a trip to the ER is needed. Vertigo is a horrible, but somewhat common, problem. I'm sure at five years old it eas scary for her. And yes, from what I hear, it feels like the room is spinning. At five years old I would wonder if she had an ear infection which can cause the equlibrium to be off and causing the dizziness. Or even a cold and stuffiness. My Dad was diagnosed with vertigo. Given antivert. If he gets that feeling again, he takes an antivert. Doctor took all kinds of tests. Said nothing serious but he shouldn't drive when having an episode. Something you don't have to worry about with a five year old. Doctor said no one knows for sure what brings on an attack. In fact, my older brother had vertigo a few years back as well for reasons we never found out. Both Dad and brother are just fine and normal now. I know a few people who have experienced vertigo and then never had another episode. Hope your little niece feels better. |
Poor sweetheart. I know nothing about it but I did come across this when searching for info on... cough... a dog. It might be something to ask about... Epley and Semont Maneuvers for Vertigo http://www.webmd.com/brain/liberatory-m ... or-vertigo |

We will all feel better after she sees the specialist at Children's-- just to be sure! |
I've been having issues with this since last January. Don't know what caused it, finally cleared up and now in November it started again. Had therapy but by that time it had eased up, this was in the spring. I do the exercises but not seeming to help. Going to the dr. again on Monday, not sure why as they've checked the carotid artery, that was fine, have some arthritis in my neck but that's all they can find. I have it worse this time when I lie down or get up, sit and it eases but it pretty much wipes me out for the day when it's bad. I am taking some medication she offered finally but she only gives me 10 days at a time so hoping she comes up with something else. Will maybe mention the antivert and see if it's an option. Hard for a five year old to deal with this so hope they come up with some solutions for her. |
Poor kid. That cannot be fun. My FIL has this condition. He also takes antivert (generic is called meclizine) and it certainly helps. Part of this condition has something to do with the positioning of the crystals in the ear. They gave him "exercises" to do to re-position the crystals. (Maybe that is what the Epley and Semont maneuvers are listed above). If he remembers to do the exercises, he goes long periods of time without an episode. My FIL didn't have this issue until he was a senior citizen, so his ears were already well set in their ways. I am hoping that, as your neice grows, this condition resolves. Laurie and Oscar |
Oh my goodness!!! How scary and ...dangerous for her. That's terrible. I hope she gets it under control. I've had it since I was 18, and have learned techniques to help control it before it gets worse ...for now. I get it every month for almost a week ..sometimes minor ...sometimes as ICH described... I am UNABLE to do anything. Hugs to poor Alayna |
My vertigo is related to migraines a according to my neurologist. I end up with bruises all over from falling because the room spins. Poor kid. Mine started at 26 and it scared me! |
