I've tried using scissors, but I'm always worried about cutting her, so I don't trim down as far as I should. Any advice? |

I use the round headed scissors and usually leave some hair. There are those tiny grooming clippers, they'd be ideal, just don't have one. |
I always use a scissors. When I'm feeling daring, I use my regular trimming scissors....and no caffeine! Otherwise, I have a scissors with short curved blades and blunt edges. Part of the technique is learning the contours and webs in the spaces - gets better the more you do it. |
I was taught to use my clippers. I was also instructed to be sure to use a #10 blade set. This leaves just enough to not cause a burn. I've never had an issue when trimming either dog and Zoey isn't the best behaved when it comes to feet but she tolerated the clippers. Vance |
Vance, I do the same thing without a problem, as long as I haven't been running the clippers first. Key is to make sure there is no heat. Getting ready to do puppy pads. NOT my favorite. Some times I end up doing one paw, do something else, go back and do one more paw, etc. Scissors probably would be easie,r but I lost my favorite blunt tipped ones and haven't found any others I really like. Plus I never seem to get as much hair out with scissors. Just my experiences. Kristine |
That's a great point Kristine! I ALWAYS do the feet first, let the clippers cool down while I do some soothing brushing and the go in to trim the privates. My goal is to always get these things done quick so I can move on the brushing a Caity loves the brushing! She'll fall asleep in minutes once the trimming is done and we're in a groove with a brush. I getting Zoey to this point too! Vance |
I've always used clippers. Zip zip and done. I don't like using scissors, it takes me to long and I can get closer with clippers. I worked in a dog grooming shop as a dog bather right out of high school. That's all I ever saw the groomers use so that's how I learned. I used to watch how they trimmed the poodles and would go home and practice on our family poodle. It wasn't the best haircut but my mother didn't care since it saved her money on getting our poodle groomed! Cindy |
I use a cordless beard trimmer. It's smaller than clippers and is easier for me to maneuver between the toes. |
I was wondering that too. Bloo has some tight mats between the pads and I'm scared of cutting him... |

You can get a blade called a toe trimmer it's designed for poodle type feel but it's very small and gets in all the nooks and crannies between the pads, and small enough to dig out them Matt's http://www.technogroom.co.uk/catalog/eb ... p-482.html |
I like a palm clipper best. I haven't had a problem with them but some dogs can be more sensitive. You do have to be more careful that you don't nick them. I use a Conairpet clipper... they were about $17 a few years ago. Mine have never gotten hot... they're the battery type. I'm not a big fan of battery tools because they run out of power fast but I found the rechargeable batteries last the longest. I trimmed 16 feet today and still have power left. |
I have always used baby scissors. You can get them from any chemist. They have blunt rounded ends and are really easy to use. Particularly when Summer hates having her paws touched! |
I just use the clippers too.... never had a problem with clipper burn or cuts etc... |
Brick's fur gets long between his pads, too. I've always just used a scissors. |
Lily is paw shy, they are very ticklish. She doesn't like her paws groomed. I lay her on her back, in my lap, so her feet stick up in the air and clip them with scissors. |
I just did Bella's feet this past weekend. I sat on the floor with her on her back wedged between my legs. I put her paw on my knee and applied a little pressure to the foot to help spread out the toes and pad. I used small blunt nosed scissors but I think it would work with trimmers as well. I think it would be quicker with them but she has ticklish toes. |
Thanks for all the tips. Time to look for new scissors, and maybe a new set of clippers! |
Foz never tolerated the palm clipper. I have always used a rounded scissors and end up killing my back every single time |

Other Vance - I was wondering about that! Until we get our own dog I'm not going to invest in clippers (though I've already started reading reviews to decide which one to add to our wedding registry! ), but we do have a beard trimmer around... Oso's starting to slide around our wood floor on the long pad hair! |
