Little man parts.

I knw this is a silly question but when your showing are you allowed to clip around the "little man bits"? For hygeine etc.
Bloo doesnt have any fur under his belly by his private, are they supposed to? I know Karen clipped it last time, but it looks ke theres no hair around that area at all...

Yes, i apologise for the silly question...im having a blonde moment :P

I wish Archie didn't have hair there! it isn't as thick on the tummy and genitals areas though
The breed standard over here states
Quote:
Neither the natural outline nor the natural texture of the coat may be changed by any artificial means except that the feet and rear may be trimmed for cleanliness.

I see no reason you can't expand the 'rear' region a bit and keep the argument for cleanliness. I really think that no one will put up much of a fight providing you keep your trimming to the minimum and don't go crazy like trimming half his belly 8O

We "shell" our boys' bellies but leave a "wick" on the end of their penises or they pee on their front legs!
Don't forget to keep some near the end for a nice straight stream. ;)
I trim under my boys a bit. For the ones showing, I trim (scissors) so it doesn't affect the outline of the dog when viewed from the side or the rear. It takes a bit of creative trimming :)
Bloo has no fur under around his little private it's skin... and in the groins there's very little hair.

I haven't and don't clip down below as there's no fur to clip which is why I was wondering whether or nor they should have...

I've never seen a male OES without a good amt of hair under there. It does vary. Chewie has what I would call a medium amt. of hair down there. Bond however is a wooly bear everywhere! For both I trim up just enough to help keep things clean down there. Bond still squats to pee, so his tons of hair really do stay clean...he pees straight down. If he ever lifts his leg, it likely will change though!
We could really gross people out and post pictures.... :twitch:
I did post a pic just now, I think it bumped into your post in cyber space and got bounced to parts unknown.
Haha dawn that would be so gross lol :P
I think it'll grow, he has spurts of hair here and there but it's very fine hes fluffy up to the tip of his private then hardly any around the private.. I suppose all dogs vary. Saves me a job when he wees on himself... Some breeds like labs are bald in the private area underneath-correct me if I'm wrong lol.
You are correct. Our min pins (they are naked!), labs, bassets, coon hound, rat terriers all either barely have any hair, or are bare skinned down there.

Of interesting note (maybe)...
It is the trend to breed in faster dogs (sight hounds, sporting breeds like pointers, etc) in with the normal sled dog breeds to get a faster team. They seem to retain all the best parts of both breeds. But what they lose is amount of coat. So now you will see sled dogs with coats, and especially the males actually have health issues with their male parts not being protected from the cold. This mostly occurs in the down-time - when they are at their house areas outdoors. Nights are very cold and long. They actually sell little belted devises like muffs to keep them safe and unfrozen! There's your bit of trivia to end the year with. ;)
Wow the things you learn :D :D :D :D :twitch:

Dawn please post pics of dogs wearing their muffs. :D
Wouldn't those the be marketed as 'ball warmers'?

Sorry, that one was too easy!
Vance
Dear lord, the things you learn that you really wonder if you needed to know

Sam - Chewie's brother doesn't grow much belly coat in that area either. Mind you, he's not a show dog so I usually keep him buzzed, But even when I don't stay on top of it he just doesn't get much hair there. No complaints from me ;-) He also has the best aim of any OES boy I've ever known and never pees on himself or gross things like that. Just as well as I am not a big fan of living with stinky boy dogs.

I'd trim as needed. Even in show coat, as long as the belly coat hangs down nicely on either side of the pee chute, I don't think it would be much of a problem. You're trimming for sanitary purposes. What's a judge to do? Flip him upside down and make sure you didn't take off any coat? :-)

Kristine
Dawn, I had no idea they sell "muffs" for the boys! :D I agree, a picture of that is due. :D

Teddy is also very hairy there. For sanitary purposes, I do have to clip around his penis. I use the clippers to keep the hair shaved around it and kind of an egg size area right in front of it. When I'm brushing Teddy's back legs and have to brush around his genitals to keep him mat free, I have to, ummm, hold them out of the way so I don't hit them with the brush. It used to make him a little nervous but now I guess he's used to it. 8O Hence the saying, "I've got him by the balls!" Sorry, I couldn't resist that one either....

Cindy
:D :D :D Thats hilarious :D :D :D
See, sometimes my very silly questions can turn out to be educational for everyone- I never knew they sold ball muffs! :P
From Clover Kennels sled dog site:
In extremely cold or windy conditions, dogs can get frostbitten on some body parts. On a male, watch the sheath of the penis and the scrotum. On a female, watch the nipples, flanks, and vulva. Be extra careful with any female that whelped over the summer. Her nipples are usually somewhat enlarged through the whole winter and therefore more susceptible to problems. Many types of equipment are available for protecting these areas, such as jackets, belly pads, and fur sheath protectors. Remember that males and females have very different problems, and the same equipment does not always suit all dogs.

Some quotes in a race report:
*Former champ Bill Cotter, who pulled in after Anderson, didn't have any frostbite issues. He'd also been
running in 60-below temperatures heading toward Circle, but had dog coats with flaps that hang in front
of the penises.

*A number of mushers use penis warmers to protect their dogs' genitals. The fleece bands wrap around the
dog's waist and connect with Velcro. But if these aren't taken off and dried regularly, it gets ugly, said
Hopkins. The fleece protectors absorb liquid when the dogs pee and end up freezing to their genitals.

*I have been looking into coats, for my dogs as well. I was thinking if I ever decide to run my dogs in colder weather. The Katahdin coats I think would be the way to go.. They have a pee tube for the males, also, so their scrotum, and penis area does not freeze.. Only thing is they are fairly expensive, if you have to have enough for a big string of dogs...

A web site- product:
http://www.coldspotfeeds.com/product_in ... cts_id=642
I remember seeing something like this being sold many years ago for humans. It was advertised as 'The thing for the man with everything and now where to keep it.'... Very strange gag gift.
