It has been waaay too long since I dropped in. Life has been so hectic and full of changes! Our Muffin has turned into one of the very best dogs ever in so many ways...and full of personality in ways that are not so enjoyable, but lovable none the less. He's so intuitive, it's almost as if he knows he's too special to ever get in trouble with mom. (And he never does) He and the other two dogs get along like they have been friends forever. The only "iffy" times are when Muffin gets hungry. He hangs his head and paces and growls, or just gets grumbly in general then. As soon as his belly is full, he's his sweet self again, so I watch for it and the other two give him a very wide berth during those times. Muffin had obviously never had toys or even knew how to play with others very well before his home with us. But now he's the first one to run up and claim a "baby" when I bring them home, or put some in the car. He is so cute to watch him prance-bounce up to take one in his mouth then trot off to shake it and lie down to preen it for awhile. He watched the other dogs for months when they had babies to figure out what he was supposed to do with it. At first he would snatch a baby then run off with it, and then - nothing. He didn't know what came next so he would just drop it and walk off. Now he will even play tug of war with the shepherd (Kilo) or chase him round and around the yard when Kilo has the baby. That's their biggest game Muffin is an extremely obedient dog. He comes immediately when I call him, is always the first to load in the car, goes straight to bed when I tell him to. He's actually more obedient in many ways then the others...and so loving!! He always comes running up to us with wags so hard his little body looks like it will snap in two. And kisses and licks all over!! He is very stubborn in other ways though...but I work around it and just don't worry about his quirks. I feel like he's been through so much, he's entitled to have 'his ways". Like he loves to dig a full size area in the yard down to the dirt and make kind of a bed for himself. And he will happily lie there for hours so contentedly. He doesn't dig up the whole yard, just his one area that he claims as his. Then he'll wander in, find me to make sure I am still nearby, then head back out again. I still cannot leave him without him getting frantic, so we fenced in our backyard at the office and I take them all with me when I go. In fact, they pretty much go eveywhere with me. And he loves to ride in the car. He just sits up and grins from ear to ear! I could go on and on...but I really just wanted to say hello and tell you ALL again how thankful I am to have found you and grateful I am for all the help you gave Mr. Muffin and I. Without your help and support from the very beginning, I doubt the outcome would have been the same. When I wrap my arms around his 88 lbs (yes!! 88 lbs!) and bury my head in his fur, his scent and his gentle love just make me want to cry, I love him so much. Thank you!! Mr. Muffin and I wish you all a wonderful 2013! God bless you and all of yours. May this be your year for unlimited health and happiness! |

Can't wait to meet Mr. Muffins! Pictures, pictures! How cute about being hungry.....low blood sugar Maybe it reminds him of the bad times before and he's slipping back... It's hard dealing with a rescue who comes with issues......but wonderful to watch a rescue relax and unpack their "baggage" and get to be a normal dog. |
Wonderful update! Thank you for stopping by to share. Pictures would be a bonus! |

Simon's Mom wrote: Hows the heartworm and hip doing? Pam, you would never know he had heartworms. The "slow-kill" of steroids/Doxcy/Advantage-Multi, seems to have worked like a charm. The vet does not want to retest until spring, but he has long been off restriction since his 6 months of the above three combo has ended. I have kept him on Advantage-Multi as his heartworm monthly however and will probably always keep him on that brand since his body is so used to it now. It was quite an ordeal getting him to take 3 pills, 3x per day on the on again/off again schedule because he is so smart. He learned to be on the look-out for anything I buried in his food. He would gingerly roll all food around in his mouth until he found the offending morsel then just spit it out. I eventually had to just get him really, really hungry then put it in his food (aka, cooked chicken, steak bites). I tried to put the pills in his throat one time - and vowed never again. It was traumatic on us both and I was afraid it would make him not trust me again since he had such trust issues with people in the beginning. But the 6 months passed uneventfully and he just kept getting stronger and stronger. As for his hip, you can see that one side of his spine is "squashed" over to the side, but he is not limping at all anymore. He runs just as fast (if not faster) as the other dogs, plays hard, loads/jumps in and out of the car without a ramp (in my car, anyway. He has problems with my husbands truck so we use the ramp for it)... and we still have rugs down on the tile and hardwood floors to help him walking, but we've replaced the big ones with smaller ones and he moves around perfectly well as he builds those muscles up too. In fact, the dogs have a game each night that when we get home from the office, I open the back car door and they all pile out then haul a$$ as fast as they can run straight into the woods. It is so funny to watch!! Muffin always is the first one to come running/prancing back to be rubbed just grinning. I took him to the vets office, who has slick floors, a couple of weeks ago because he had an ear infection. He walked perfectly! (Whew. I worried about that one a little) It's miraculous what some good food, rest and exercise - and love - can do. He does have problems with his eyes, I have noticed. He can see, but I don't know how clearly. He relies on his sense of smell alot. I think he has been poked in the eyes, maybe even cut, when he was so furry/overgrown. Florida has some nasty, sharp needles in our woods. But he is truly like a different dog from the one who used to sit in the woods and cry out loud and howl. He is afraid of the dark, and afraid of being alone. I cannot imagine how horrible all that was for him. What a trooper. What an amazing dog. I am so blessed to have him in my life and I have learned such humility and tenderness since knowing him. I am trying to figure out how to start a foundation for abused/abandoned dogs here. I know there are so many of those types of foundations...but I am afraid with the economy that is ahead for all of us, there will be more and more people who cannot afford to take care of their pets, and less and less donations to the shelters... But that's for another discussion, another day. Have a safe New Years Eve, Pam and everyone!! |
Great to hear I posted your pictures: |
