Clinging Poop

Dexter periodically does it and now Winston sometimes does it, too. They will poop and it won't leave their body, it just masses at their butt, jams in hair in one huge lump. Like they didn't push it out with enough force and couldn't pinch if off. Imagine they had pants on, pooped then pulled the pants off. It is very uncomfortable for them and sometimes seems painful when they get help to get rid of it. I can't correlate it to anything, no change in food, nothing they ate. It is not appreciably different texture than a normal poop, it just doesn't leave their body very well.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Sounds like their poop isn't firm enough.... more protein usually helps that. Trimming the hair on the bum to an inch or less is a good idea too.
My first experience with this was probably about 4/5 years ago. We were at the dog park, walking and Simon stopped and squatted. I waited, nothing fell to the ground so I kept waiting some more, nothing. The light was fading, so I quick checked his backside and there it was. I had a bag in hand...waiting...and tried to wipe/pull it off. It got all tangled in the hair and what a mess. Went home, into the tub to clean up and than cut some hair.

Since than we do backside checks. If the hair gets a little too long the poo gets stuck and then you have a mess on your hands.

I just have to mention though that with proper diet this just doesn't happen unless it's an unusual circumstance (like if they get into something they shouldn't) even with dogs in full coat.
One can do it this morning then not this afternoon or again for a month or more. They never do it at the same time. The poop that gets stuck is always firm. Winston has only done it 2 or 3 times, Dex maybe 8 and he's 2. I don't think the length of hair has anything if to do with it. Whenever it happens they have a very hard time going, like it's a result of semi-constipation.
This has happened very occasionally with Mady, and more likely when her bum is in desperate need of a trim. One time was particularly embarrassing. Mady was hunched over trying to poop, and there was this cop car 20ft away. Mady stopped, I looked, there was nothing to pick up. "$@#%" I said as I checked her behind, and yep, there was a big ball of poop stuck back there. I started walking her home and the coppers drove up alongside me and said "hey, you didn't pick up". I wanted to roll my eyes up into the back of my head, and just said she didn't produce anything, they asked me to show them I had poop bags on me, which I did of course.   I should have lifted her bum up to their window and said "believe me, I would much rather just pick up poop off the ground than the butt-cleaning I will have to do at home".
I wish we had laws that required picking up! Few of the dog walkers in our neighborhood carry bags. The man across the street walks without bags, if I could catch his dog using my yard I wouldn't hesitate to pick it up and take him the bag, "Here, your dog left this in my yard and I thought you would like it back."

My guys know when I take the show lead to the backyard it's time for a butt wash (stuck or soft). They do a good heel down the walk to the side faucet and turn with their butt over the grass. They don't complain at all but I sure do, complain and apologize the entire time. Luckily they haven't needed it when it was very cold.
Sprocket has only had this problem when eaten something he shouldn't-sock,inner sole (when tiny boy) grass. I have stood waiting and he is "trying hard" only to look at me confused-a check on rear end and a helping "pull out" does the trick. He does give me a look as if to say "that's embarsing",x
A similar thing happens every so often with Bones if I forget to vacuum and she's been using her treat ball...

She'll accidentally ingest one of MY hairs (which are pretty long) and when it comes time to exit her body, my hair will prevent it from being totally, ahem, pinched off.

The WORST part of this is that she's so freaked out about her poo dangling that she'll instinctively drag her butt on the ground...
