A few things...one could be allergies. Another could be the mats in between the "toes" are hurting her. And if so, be careful if you decide to trim them out. You can easily deeply cut the skin between the toes. Let the vet do it. Also, there could be something stuck in there you can't see - a thorn, dried up mud, a splinter, glass....My dogs won't let me check out their feet either. Think its a sheepie thing! |
Chowder did that for awhile. When her hair is long I it just feels good. BUT she has licked sores and wounds so you MUST look at it and check it. She needed cream and a sock for like 2 weeks once. We let her lick a little at a time but always stop when it seems excessive and look at it daily. |
The mat could be the problem or the result of the problem.......If there is something up under the mat, even a small stone then the licking makes the problem worse by making the mat worse. Yes, first thing, the mat must go. Then second examine between the toes, wash carefully, dry well. Also check toe nails in case one is cracked. Maybe she stepped on a nail, stone, stick, has tree sap up there, weed head, thorn, snow remover salt.....etc, etc. Could be a damaged toe, stepped on, stubbed, etc. Allergies are often expressed by foot licking or chewing. Could be food allergy, house allergy.....or even a psychological problem and she's calming herself by chewing/licking. Start with getting the toes cleaned and checked. Hopefully that's it because the allergies are a pain in the toot to figure out. |
Our old sheepie used to lick her front paws legs/paws so much she turned them rust colored like her beard. Part of it was a habit she had always had and at one time she had an infection in lip that'd caused her to lick her paws for comfort. There are so many reasons, Ru bites his paws when he has something stuck in them, he will bite them constantly until we get whatever it is out, he once had a tiny splinter we couldn't see and bit his back paw for a day until we found it, the first few times we checked we couldn't feel anything. I imagine this would be an even bigger problem with a sheepie as they have so much hair. |
The only time Archie obsessed over a paw was when he had a blackthorn between his toes - if she won't let you check properly get to the vet before they close for xmas |
It could be a number of things, I'd take her to the vet and have it checked out just to be sure everything is okay. The matts could be hiding something, and the matts need to be clipped out anyways. |
Bloo has a habit of chewing his front paw since he got stung by a bee...The wounds healed but he has the habit of licking sand chewing the same place. |
