Oil spill cleanup - Construction dumpster or spill cleanup?

If I have a small oil spill, can I do the spill cleanup myself and put the absorbant material into a construction dumpster, or do I have to call a hazardous waste company and contract with them for oil spill cleanup?

Is there a limit to the amount that I can clean up myself?

My town brings all of it's trash to an incinerator - wouldn't that be a good way to get rid of an oil spill, by burning it in an environmentally friendly incinerator? Wouldn't it, in fact, help the incinerator by providing some nice fuel?

Just curious...

Good question. Call your waste division Monday a.m.

If spill on concrete, try this product. It works great!!

Ron,
Cat Litter works amazingly on getting oil up and off concrete... Don't know where your spill is... But good luck!

You can clean it up yourself if it is around 2 gallons or so and not near any water runoff areas or over a large area of soil. You will need to use an absorbent material (kitty litter is the universal answer!) to soak it up and then put it in a plastic beg or container that does not leak. If the oil has leaked into an area of soil, you need to dig up all contaminated soil and place that into a container. If it has gotten into a waterway, that is a problem and will need professional help. Stop anymore oil from getting into water or soil by using a bag of kitty litter as a dam. or use a broom to stem the tide until help can be gotten. (Mainly for bigger spills.)
Do not use water or any other liquids for cleaning, oil is unfriendly and does not play well with others. Also makes it nearly impossible to dispose of.
You can then call your local municipality and they will be able to direct you on how to dispose of it. Most areas have a municipally run service that takes care of this some even have curbside pickup. They definitely like just plain oil but in any case, they will direct you on proper disposal for your area.
You can use this website to find other possible areas for disposal.

Mainly for used motor oil, but a few other things. www.earth911.org/master.asp?s=ls&serviceid=1
