At work, I answer the phone. We have six lines(yes I have had them all light up). Someone called today looking for someone who works nights. I told them she is not here..."when will she be in?". Sorry I can't give you that information. "can you give her a message" No we don't take massages for employee's. "I need to get a hold of her, can you tell me when she will be in?" No "Can you give her my name and number". Sorry we do not take messages for employee's. "Can I speak to your manager?" I transfer. Two seconds later the phone rings and its the same person looking for the employee. I go through the whole spiel again, and again, and again. They keep calling back. The manager is in her office and I transfer again and race to her office to let her know what is going on and this person keeps calling back. She takes the name of the person and asks what the business is and his superior and the number. He gets mouthy with her and hangs up. Calls back looking for the employee. This keeps happening again and again. What this person is doing is trying to jam the line. We had four lines going and it was all the same person. It had happened in the pharmacy area of the hospital and jammed the lines last week . We got security involved, who then called at&t who knew about this and then reverses the process and tries to jam their line. Their own medicine. We had one employee call them back and say they were the person they were looking for a what did they want. They asked for her birthday...she refused to give it and they got mouthy with her and hung up. Called back and asked for the same employee and jammed two more lines. We just picked up the phone...saw it was them and hung up....four more lines ring and its the same person. I just called work...it gives me an invalid # at the hospital. I called the charge and they had to close down the line because this person did manage the jam the line...meaning they were using all the lines...the same person calling using all the lines. They were going to try to open it in a little while. That means that no family, MD's or anyone can call. Who does this? What kind of thrill do they get from it? |

Boat air-horn from Wal-Mart for $5.99 will fix them. Vance |
There are a lot of crazies out there. Unfortunately as a compassionate society who does not want to interfer on a person's rights, we can't do much about this......until after the fact. Is it illegal to tie up the lines to a hospital...probably a small crime with a scolding from a judge. |
Vance wrote: Boat air-horn from Wal-Mart for $5.99 will fix them. Vance That would work but I work in an ICU...quiet is the buzz word. |
No a horn in ICU own't work......might get a few hearts beating faster..... |
If it is an outside line you can dial *57 follow the instructions and it will be reported. You may have to involve authorities, it depends. I had a series of horrible calls all from the same person that actually left me in tears. Yes, me. In. Tears. I had to involve my local police, because it was an out of state #(but this isn't my first rodeo-- this has happened to me before) I'd check into it at the very least. Sounds like this person is itching for trouble anyway! Shellie |
AT&T needs to trace the call, then the hospital can get the police involved. Authorities do not like people (crazy or not) messing with hospitals. I, of course, would answer the phone, and let rip a string of swear words at the @sshole. Then I'd start asking HIM questions just to mess with him. I have no patience with that cr@p. |
Glad to be aware if this kind of scam. I have 17+ incoming phone lines. Occasionally get the same recorder calls on multiple lines. I transfer these calls to the fax machine Other dipwad calls I transfer to a bogus voice mail. I can't even IMAGINE these types of calls to an ICU!!! I wonder what would happen if those types of calls were transfered to 911/Police & Fire or even the State Attorney Generals Office. or BBB? |
Without knowing all of the circumstances (perhaps there's a specific reason this person is attacking the ICU) in general these types get their thrill from the reaction of the victim. Don't feed into it. Just hang up. If (ok, when) they call back, just hang up. Quietly, without flourish. If it is a specific attack on the ICU, I'd wonder if it's a person who wasn't allowed in to see a patient (or of course an acquaintance of someone who was lost in the ICU). I doubt if there's a specific law about harassing phone calls to particular institutions, but in this day and age just about anything you do can be a crime. So "criminal mischief" or "stalking" or "violation of civil rights" or "criminal threatening" or "disorderly conduct" or any like these would probably fit. |
