http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/business/2012/12/airport-scam-dupes-unsuspecting-pet-buyers/ Ms. Mills went looking on CL for a pedigree dog. Is CL really the best place to find a reputable breeder? OK, so maybe Mills doesn't know about the AKC and their Breeder Referral service. And I know that someone will eventually post about how not all the breeders on their list are the best and that there are some that aren't on the list that should be. While this may be true, that's not my point. My point is that people, like Ms. Mills didn't know and seemingly didn't bother to look and learn. My son wants an English Bulldog and with one quick Google search, I found him three breeders in the tri-state that were on the AKC list. If I were to contact those breeders, I'll bet that I'd get names of others, some who were known to be reputable and not on the list. This same thing happened with me when I went searching for an OES puppy. When looking to get a puppy, you really owe it to yourself AND certainly the puppy to become an expert as best you can. Your brain should hurt from learning so much by the time you actually get the puppy. No wait, she wants TWO. How many times have we heard here to NEVER get siblings to take home and raise? How many times have people done this and think, 'how hard can it be?' only to regret it? Nowhere did they mention an actual purchase price or what that amount was. So with this and the fact that Mills went to CL, I hate to judge, but I'm inclined to think that Mills was after a low cost puppy, times two. Living animals are where the old saying 'you get what you pay for.' really stands up. Again, someone is gonna post that they paid this low price and got a great dog. Someone will post they paid way more and got a dog with this issue. Again, I'm working on averages here. If you pay a premium, you should expect a certain level of quality. I'm also willing to bet Ms. Mills was asking for a 'pet quality' dog, times two. If you buy something, anything, sight-unseen off CL, you will get what you pay for. Seriously. When you're buying a puppy, go meet the breeder, parents and the litter. If you don't, you're assuming all the risk and it's you, your family and worst of all the puppy who pays this awful price. I'll admit that I didn't go meet the breeder, parents and litter of Caitlyn. But I did work with a breeder who was highly recommended by SEVERAL people whom I have nothing but respect for; a couple who are breeders and work regularly with Caitlyn's breeder. I went into this with full confidence and no second thoughts. All with the full support of those friends and Caitlyn's breeder, whom I still speak to almost weekly, over a year later. Vance |

When we got Bailey - I felt worried because we basically did all the wrong things. I so wanted to have a good relationship with the breeder but no one up here was breeding. So what to do??????? We went through the Irish Kennel club accredited breeder scheme. We were recomended a breeder but they were the other end of the country. We didn;t even have a video of the babies or anything so I didn't know what to think? In the end we met up with the breeder at a dog show in Dublin half way between their home and ours. We chose Bailey from a still photo shot (So not good!). We knew nothing about him other than he had a teddy which actually didn't arrive with him. We were extremely lucky. We have a wonderful pup and all the papers and contact numbers. As we met at the Dublin dog show we knew then that everything was ok and up front. Still I would have liked to have seen the other siblings in their home with their mom. Our pup was a good price but still on the low side for what he is, I expected to pay a lot more! I see so many cheep adds for Oes dogs which are obvious scams and I see other adds for Oes x dogs for £900+ What???They are mutts and worthless financially but yet folk still pay wild amounts of cash for something that is not pure breed and has no papers - you can get one of those for a fraction of the price from the local dog pound. Some folk are so gulable it is unbelievable. After 3 rescue dogs we so wanted a good pup this time round and we are extremely lucky!!!! Oes |
At least no dogs were harmed in this situation. I'm with you, Vance. If the situation looks too good to be true, it probably is. Laurie and Oscar |
And someone will probably feel sorry for her and give her two dogs. |
I would say about 60% of people don't do there homework & that's why these people get away with type of practice. That's why these puppy farmers are still in business also I have read messages that the breeders ask too much money for there dogs/bitches & another thing people don't know how too look after the animals as well. Clean teeth/brush dog/clean ears/flea & worm the pets & you could go on |

So you mean I shouldn't have wired $200 to that Nigerian Prince? Wow. What about the $1000 to help my friend trapped in prison in Thailand pay her consular fees? I can't trust everybody on the internet? What is this world coming to!!?!?! |
Same thing in my book. Someone conning a person but without the puppy. But the person who gets the puppy might have larger cost in the long run |
