Suddenly a picky eater!

Did anyone else's dog get really picky about what they ate after a spay? Momoko suddenly just can't eat unless she has some wet food mixed in with her dry. It's just weird that she wants wet food suddenly - she has liked it before - but it never stopped her from eatting her dry either.

Do you guys think it might be because she just doesn't feel good and it needs to be dressed up a bit to be tempted? Or do you think it's just her being a picky eater? :?

How long since her spay? If it is recently and she is still healing, she may just not want to eat much as her tummy will be sore.
Gucci has gone thru the same thing. He was neutered a month and a half ago and has started eating it just dry again. Maybe they are like children, going thru a picky eating stage...he always seemed like he found other things more interesting! Playing with his toys, etc! Now he just is the messiest eater around! Kibble everywhere! I sometimes wish he would just stay put and eat but he insists on walking and eating...hopefully he'll grow out of this too!

Just after her spay.

Well - at least someone else has delt with this before. Maybe it is her just being sore... sometimes I wonder though... you would think it would keep her from trying to jump... it's been difficult as heck to keep her quiet! :(
Try a picker eater......for 10 years! Paige is my "princess." One must learn to be creative, change the menu often and if their nose goes up, take the bowl away and wait until the next feed.

Paige gets 50% dog food and 50% creative extras: cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, mackerel, salmon, meat balls, oatmeal cookies (doggie recipe, far less sugar than human), mashed potatoes, pumpkin, rice, pasta including mac and cheese, scrambled eggs, etc, etc.

Paige has always been this way. Could be your one is too hot to eat, summer time. Try to keep her on her feed or else you'll end up on this merry-go-round.
SheepieBoss: You're not alone on the merry go round. I too, have a princess in Lucy. I vowed that I wouldn't repeat that with Clyde-- and I've been sticking to it!
Paige, the Great Pyr, came this way from the breeder. Her last words were, "Good luck on getting her to eat." She wasn't kidding. On the positive side, Paige developed a heart problem about 3 years ago. We went to the cardiac-vet who was surprised at her "thinness." He was immediately thinking endocrine problems until I said, "This is the only animal at our home, 2 or 4 footed who knows just how much she should eat and not a morsel more." Her slender body is kept her alive and in remarkable fine health (the heart problem was probably misdiagnosed or just normal for her) for a 10.5 year old.

Good thing they has a lot of hair........she's one skinny broad under that beautiful coat.

She has you wrapped!

It's okay, all of mine have me wrapped too, so don't feel alone.

If you leave her dry food long enough and she realizes that you will not put the wet food on it, she will eat it.

Welcome to the 12 step program for wrapped sheepies owners!

Everyone always told me that about Lucy. She lost 30 pounds before I rescued her because she refused to eat the dry food they gave her! I even tried working half dry/half canned for awhile and she'd just suck the wet food off the dry and leave the soggy pellets on the carpet. I just gave in at that point because it was so much easier than cleaning all the time. It's not too much more expensive, she's very healthy, perfect weight and great teeth so it can't be too bad!
Hey Butter

How much wet food do you feed her daily out of curiosity? Also, what kinds of foods have you used and what works best for you?

The food labels say I should be feeding Momo 2 - 12.5 oz cans... and if she becomes 70 lbs it says to feed her 4! It seems like... a lot? I've seen her eat before - and even though she sucks the food up I can't imagine her eatting so much in one day. Of course, it says to feed two cans of wet food each day for my cats and they can't eat that much either.

I decided last night and this day to not mix her dry with her wet again - since it might continue to make her picky... and she has maybe eatten 1 cup all day today.

If she does end up to be one of those canned eatting dogs (I don't mind much - but eeeek the price) do you guys think it is alright to give her multiple brands? Like... premium food, then maybe some not so premium the next day to make sure she is getting good stuff half of the time?
The can's suggestions, I've found are WAY off. Lucy's been as heavy as 80 pounds and has never eaten more than 2 cans a day. I do supplement her diet with about 4 milkbones/meaty bones a day for teeth too. She's down to about 60 pounds now (where she should be) and still eats about the same. Some days 1 and a half, others 2.

I've tried almost every kind of canned and she loves the canned ProPlan. It actually looks like stew-- big hunks of meat and whole veggies. Quite reminiscent of chicken a la king! I know there may be some that are better nutritionally but she's done really well on ProPlan and it's never a fight to make her eat anymore.

Ironically, now that Clyde eats only dry food, she's developed an interest in snacking on it now. Spolied brat!
