Great Life has 3 varieties (buffalo, chicken, fish). We decided to go with the buffalo because Foz has had issues with chicken in the past and he usually smells funny from the fish. guess what?! It seems we are having some success! I am so very happy and will be writing to the company to thank them and to ask them to NEVER add peas! |

That's great! Good detective work. |

Cooking for him would be okay as well; however, the kibble is just more convenient for us. If necessary, I will cook for him. I was thinking that the Honest Kitchen Preference (dehydrated veggies) and mixing ground white meat turkey would be the best recipe to start with. Will still keep it in mind in the event that Great Life adds peas in the future....ugh! |
We feed Orijen. I don't think it has any peas - unless they changed the ingredients lately. My Bowie is allergic to peas and they cause him tummy upset as well. |
Seems like a ton of work but I completely get how important it is to find something that works with Fozzie's tummy. Maybe you should write to Honest Kitchen too and ask that they keep the veggies out. I'm surprised that it doesn't since peas look cute in dehydrated food. I had no idea peas were a source of digestive trouble but it makes sense. It is good to keep in mind that it really can be anything. |
that is grrrrreat!! it is so hard to find the right food that it's HUGE to get it right!! |

Orijen does have peas in it, but it's a little bit further down on the list. The Nutro had it like in the first 4 ingredients. I'm guessing because peas are used more as a filler or binder and the dehydrated doesn't need it. I also saw some kibble that includes grains that do not have peas which wouldn't be needed as a binder. |
Peas are a vegetable source of protein, so they are added to dog food to pump up the protein level, without adding more meat. Laurie |
