Windows 8.

I am just starting to learn to use Win 8 on my new pc.
The more I use it the more it looks like my old desktop like I had it all in win 7.
OMG - am I getting old and stubborn, not willing to learn anything new?

I Wonder if it's possible to make shortcuts to this forum and other netplaces
from the "app desk" - the desktop with all the applications?

What do you think about win 8?

What I really like about win8 is that it is very fast! :high5:

I haven't seen it yet! I look forward to seeing more info about it here.
I haven't played with it yet.
I had high hopes when the beta test version had a way to shut Metro (the tile interface) down and revert back to a regular windows experience, but the full build release did not include this feature, so you're stuck with Metro.
A few people I know who have switched haven't embraced it. They feel the Metro interface, while probably great for a touch-controlled device (like a phone or tablet), does not work so well with a mouse & keyboard.

There are 3rd party patches available to disable Metro if one wanted to.

For me, I'll stick with Win7 as long as I can.
I just upgraded to Win 7 and hope I never have to use Win 8 from what I've seen of it.
My laptop runs Windows 7, but is a touchscreen.
I'm happy with 7 as it is also touchscreen friendly. I got the solid state drive, so speed isn't an issue either.
As a IT person its rubbish. I will add more but going out on the beer but its based on the cloud system which is not very secure but if you have a tablet with not a lot of space then its fine. I will give you a better update later and he comes the BEER
I'm with Parwaz. From an IT/network tech's perspective, its not suited for the corporate world. In the 'Metro' mode, it's too 'gamey' and I see this as a big productivity killer. People will spend way too much time 'playing' with it and end up getting in trouble, literally.

Or office is slowly moving from XP to 7 and this is a much smoother transition than the big shots expected. I rue the day we move to anything above 7.

LUDITES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like it, the win 8 steered programs have a very nice clean feel to them.

And I started off on mainframes with punched cards and punched paper tape!

Sfunny how one just adapts and works on whatever systems, currently various flavours of Unix/Linux Various iterations of Windows from NT win 95/98/XP/7 at work.

Android and Win8/7/XP and RISC OS at home

Missus has i wotsits which I hate with a passion ;-)

Now talk to me about silly placements of CMOS batteries in some of our rack pcs thgat need you stripping out the expansion cards grrr and HP designing bespoke powersupplies for the sake of it! grrrrr :-)
I still work on mainframes/Unix/windows/sql & I could go on. The issue I find is that someone has your own data. Mark the cloud is still hosted on big clunky servers & I have not been called a Luddite for at least for 2 weeks :)
hmmm, I starting to look at getting a new computer......shhhh, don't tell DH. Problem this week trying to download a beta program and my computer just won't take it.

midi_dm error.....the big one. MaxMSP not responding, ah nuts.

System is.......don't laugh......Vista.

Your discussion on 7 vs. 8 isn't helping. But then I am a ludite in that I'm not sure I want a laptop. Horrors 8O . Not WiFi, don't need portability. I like a dedicated spot.

I'd even consider making the jump to Mac.......if I thought my old addled brain could handle it. Moutain Lion?
I like PC's too but someday if I live long enough I might want a laptop.

Sister-in-law got a new mac that is very compact and they love it. Guess she had a son's friend come and help her learn the system but very happy with it. Not sure I'm up to that.
If you get your computer soon, you can probably get one with Windows 7. It seems like they always have them available for 6 months or so after the new system comes out.

At work, we store everything in "the Cloud." I can't begin to tell you how much I hate it - periodically the connection goes down and we lose everything but the intranet. Our phones are even internet based (losing them isn't a bad deal until I need to call a parent to pick up their sick kid).

As long as they don't do away with external hard drives, I will get along.

My daughter has a Mac that she loves. I hated them at work - so glad when we switched over to PCs.
I forgot that windows 8 is built for touch screen so if you have a normal pc its makes life a lot harder as well
At my work we have 42 XP-based touch screens for printing labels for the production line and I get into this mode of using them and if I'm out on the floor too long and then go back into the office my first several attempts to touch a monitor always gets a chuckle from whomever I'm helping.

While it my be a convenience for some, when I sit at my computer I like to sit back and now the monitor is out of reach which makes the touch screen kinda pointless.

Vance.
your right there Vance. I would say I think the whole windows 8 is geared up for the tablet market. Short on space, touch screen and low process power & its a good way for these large companies to charge you money & how do you know that they will not access your data and sell it on
Looking at Windows 8, you can still use a mouse......and would have to without a touch screen monitor. What about a touch pad instead of a mouse.......that way your sticky fingers would just be on the pad and not the screen??

I'm with you Vance, I like my screen and me to be apart, often out of arm's reach. Easier on the eyes which at an advanced age is a concern,

I'm still contemplating what to do :lmt:
If you have a touch screen, then yes Windows 8 is fantastic.
If you don't, stick with Windows 7.

It's basically pointless for you to switch. It's the same thing, just more difficult to use and understand. I'm pretty nerdy and I have issues with even doing simple things. If they had something that taught you how to use it, then maybe I'd like it more, but they don't.

Does anyone else remember Windows 98? That was the best!

Hey, this is my 1000th post! :D
Windows 98 SE but it had taken them so long to fix the issues but the trouble with Microsoft they bring out a new operating system with so many bus which bug me. GRRRR
Can an old dog learn new tricks? That is a PC user of 25 years learn Mac? I know Mac can get virus, but not to the extent PCs are targeted.
I played with a Microsoft Surface tablet (which runs Windows 8 ) and an Apple iPad last night at the store.
They operate almost identically.

On the iPad, you touch the Safari button to get to the browser. On the Surface, you touch the "internet" tile. Same thing for music, pictures, FB, etc.
And the Surface has a home button on the front of the device (off of the screen) just like the iPad has.

In my mind, the Surface is the better product. It operates just like the iPad. It has the touch cover that the iPad doesn't. You can print from the Surface via WiFi whereas you cannot on the iPad. The Surface has an SD card slot for expandibility. The iPad does not. The Surface has a USB port so you can put stuff on the device. iPad does not. Surface has an HDMI out port. Not sure if iPad does.
The only thing the iPad has going for it is the Retina display (which may not matter at such small screen sizes) and a crap-load of apps.

So I think Windows 8 will be very good on a device like a tablet or phone. Not sure about a regular computer though.
It's absolutely fine on a desktop machine, I have been using it a few months now.
Well we will se what pops up in the future. It's started from these sodding out sourcing companies to charge people to host information on there servers.
I have an iPad and bought a Surface for my son. I had a few minutes to play with the Surface and I liked it. Windows 8 is intuitive for people that use tablets. It's touch screen or mouse click so PC users can transition easily. The screen icons/layout is simple and basic operation concept isn't that much different from any Microsoft product. Had the surface been available last spring, I probably would have purchase it rather than my iPad. Dollar for dollar, the iPad isnt that special.
The music program I wanted to run hasn't been written for iPads....yet. To come. All in all, I'm staying with this old machine and will forgo the music program until I see how badly taxes, etc are going up after first of year.

Lots of wants but don't have the means.......
