New puppy with pinpoint hernia and possible hip soreness!!!

OK, everyone, I need some ideas from the experienced sheepie owners out there!

We have a new 12 wk old pup, both parents ofa'd, one is Excellent, one is Good. At the vet today, he said her left hip basically was a little sore and wasn't getting as good flexation as the right. She snapped at him, a first I've ever seen from my sweet girl. In addition, he said she has a pin point sized umbilical hernia, may close on it's own within the next six weeks. Regarding her hip, he wants her back in 3 weeks to re~check. If still an issue, wants to start her on a supplement, contains glucosamine, or something, I was too shaken up to take it all in. And of course, prelim xray at six months.
We did alot of research on this breed prior to getting our girl, and we have hopes of showing her. Any ideas/thoughts regarding this??? She's been with us almost two weeks...I'm going to speak with her breeder this weekend, once I get my head around this.
Thanks so much for your input!!!

I don't know anything about sheepdogs, but glucosamine is doing wonders for my mom!
Hi Baylor,

My rescue sheepie was recently diagnosed with dysplasia and I wrote a post regarding the newest research and meds ( a combination of glucosamine and 2 others) The post is located on this page near the bottom called The Newest Research on Dysplasia.

Don't want you to worry however, as it may not be the case but that of a sore hip when your little one was playing. I currently have 15 year old Blue whom has amazed all the vets that see him...very active and agile still even at his advanced age. At 2 he started limping and would cry if anyone touched his hip..turned out he had just hurt himself somehow and after 2 wks of taking it easy - he was okay and has continued to be. I'm hoping this is the same thing as your little girl.

You mentioned the parents were hip checked so that's a good sign. Good Luck and please keep us up to date as to what they discover. You'll be in my thoughts.

Yes, as I mentioned to you, I would definitely get that hip xray at six months, however it could be nothing, it may just be the way the pup is growing right now. As for the hernia, not much to worry about, it happens often when the mom or breeder tugs too hard on the umbilical when cutting it.
I hope everything works out! :)
Thanks guys for your replies...I'm going to do a little more looking into that glucosamine...hopefully it will not be necessary!
We live in a split level, and I'm going to be carrying her up and down the stairs to go out for a while, just to be on the safe side! :)
Definitely try to keep away from the stairs for a bit.

Don't forget your little pupster hasn't got very much muscle yet and won't get much until about 6 months old then she will start building the muscle up.The main growing before six months is done with the bones.

So going up and down stairs will be putting extra pressure on her hips as she hasn't got much muscle there yet. :)
