______________________________________________________________________________________ Our boy had an appt. today with his vet. Good news is, x-rays show no real change in his spine, and, for his age and injury, really very little arthritis. He is loosing strength in his hind quarters however. We keep him lean, which is a plus. My thought was plenty of walking to help build up muscle. Um.. once again, I'm a bad Mom. Vet thinks the walking - while it helps - is just too much for him right now. Max loves the colder weather, but, his poor joints don't. So, I am to cut down on the distance we walk.. and ... instead of the lane, which pounds his joints.... I need to do our walking around the house, on softer ground. Again-- how stupid can I be. And, for mobilty and strength, we have a series of excercises. Start out 1/2 hour on each hind leg- work up to an hour. In typical Max style, when the vet was showing me what he wanted me to do... it must have been a bit ouchy for Max. No growling, snipping, or anything like that of course. Instead, he smothered Louie with TONS of kisses--- like he was trying to distract him from the excercises. ♥. He is also scheduled for a series of laser treatments. We are going to stick with the Rimadyl for now, and re-evaluate in two weeks, after his laser treatments and additional excercises. He may go on a combination of meds but for now- business as usual for scripts. |

Thanks for the update. Your not a bad Mom you were doing what you thought would help. As a phyiscal therapist I can say it's quite tricky to figure out how much exercise is enough even in humans, it's often a case of trial and error, so I guess it would be possibly even trickier in dogs. Good luck with the exercises I hope you see an improvement quickly. |
Max has the best parents and best care of any dog. You did exactly right by keeping him lean and exercising. Sometimes, what they need changes and when it did, you went to the Vet. That's great! It is all you can hope that you notice the changes and know what needs attention. Which you did. I hope the gentler walks and new exercise regime keep your sweetest boy happy and strong. What are the laser treatments? |
I'm sorry to hear Maxie is not feeling so well. I know the cold weather is hard on those old bones. I hope all the new therapies work for him and he's feeling better soon. Hugs to that ole boy. |
Val- below is a link with a brief summary of the laser treatment used on Max. We first started it when we were trying ANYTHING to get him better. It was a God send. Since then, he has been "re-charged" using this. We can't say enough good about the laser! http://lasertherapyfordogs.com/ |
Our vet and The Paw both have the laser therapy machines. Troy (our vet) even used the laser on himself, after his knee surgery |
Very interesting! I have not heard of that here for dogs but the pulsed laser sounds like this thing I tried once for my plantar fasciitis. It felt very strange but really helped resolve it more quickly. I've also tried laser treatment for rosacea, but that was astonishingly painful and didn't really help. It reduced the redness for a while but it came back. Good to know and glad it is helping Max. |
