Am having an issue and hope I can get some information here.... Bode was taking Trifexis, his stomach didn't like it and on 4 different occasions he threw it up. One month it stayed down. Then vet gave us a little "meaty" type of heart worm med...that stayd down, but then vet called and said it should not be given to OES???? Anyway, tried another brand which was fine, now no longer on the market.... Just was wondering what everyone who reads this gives to their furbabies.... |

Oscar takes Sentinel monthly for heartworm. It also works against roundworm and hookworm. The "meaty" one (Heartguard maybe?) probably contained Ivermectin, which is a no-no for OES, as some dogs have a genetic mutation that makes this ingredient harmful for them. Laurie and Oscar |
We were doing Interceptor, but, that was impossible to get since the manufacturing site closed or something like that. We switched to Heartguard---but, I should note that Dahlia was tested for the mutant gene and DOES NOT have it... so, it is not an issue for her to take this. It is meaty and must be chewed. |
We use Heartgard and have for all the dogs. Good catch by the vet! Our OES don't have the genetic tag so hasn't been a problem. Since we do get cold here in winter, we discontinue the meds about Nov/Dec and don't pick them up again until mosquito season begins again. Even an infected dog has a 90 day window where the product (Ivermectin) will kill the buggers. |
We use Trifexis. Dexter throws it up after an hour or so about every other month. The vet said an hour in his stomach gets all the medication into his system. I have not seen one flea one other dog and only one dead tick on Dex. We have a robust mosquito population in the summer with no issue to this point. |
