Ugh... what a pain it is to find something that works. I hope you do find something. I'm a huge "the honest kitchen" fan. Have you tried that? They have grain free and the ones I've gotten do not contain peas. I usually get it from wag.com If it's your first time order, you can always get a huge huge discount if you do a google for one. It's a dehydrated homemade food. I add more dry than what they suggest so it's not "wet" food (wet is a nice way of saying messy in their beards). I got it down to the right consistency that it stopped leaving anything in yuki's beard. presently yuki is on prednisone (5 mg) a day and that's enough to stop allllllllllllllll the many years and years of itching, biting, etc that she has had. The vet said it's so stinkin low of a dose for her size that he recommends just giving it daily and he doesn't think there will be really any long term effects esp when weighing in how it completely stops all of her problems. yuki and I have been extremely happy for a few months now. |
Thanks Leanne! I am going to IM you my phone number. Please call me if you wouldn't mind. It would also be great to hear your voice after lke 7 years of chatting on line Honest Kitchen is high on my list. The Embark with turkey is SO EXPENSIVE. I was thinking about just getting the Preference with just veggies and then making turkey patties to keep in the freezer. I'm just not osure how he'd do with sweet potatoes which is #1 ingredient in the Preference variety. My vet never suggested a low dose of prednisone for Foz. He has been on higher doses in the past and packs on the pounds! He takes this crazy expensive liquid cyclosporine which costs me $170 every 45 days! If we can get away with prednisone that would be very nice. I'm going to ask him about that next time. Rigt now I need to get the food situation worked out. When he's in distress, so am I |
http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=raw+feed+dogs&sort=relevance used to be a raw feed OES group on Yahoo! Don't know if they are still around. I'd try Honest Kitchen first. If you go raw feed you'll need to have storage (freezer) space for the raw meaty bones......usually available from butcher shops....they'll order you in a case of chicken backs or pork necks for example. You'll need to catch up on the latest vitamin supplements to go along with the veggie slop (food processor), fish oil, etc. When I did it the guys would hover near the food processor when they heard the whiz, "Oh boy dinner slop!" The raw meaty bones are great at keeping the teeth bright and clean! Must be raw, soft bones. Never cooked, never thick. Chicken backs and pork necks were my mainstay. Even pups can eat chicken wing tips once they have teeth. I wish a Florida breeder was on line here, she starts all her pups raw.........Valerie's Henry was one. |
Izzie and Taylor both eat raw. There is a raw chicago group on yahoo....I read their threads but usually don't participate...BARFINGchicago. There is a raw oes group but there is not much traffic on there. I order some ground stuff from My Pet Carnivore and pick up once a month at one of their drop offs. Otherwise I find deals at local grocery stores on meat. I eased my way in by cooking for Izzie before going raw. It is a bit jarring at first. If you have any questions just let me know. Hope you find something to help Fozzie |
I also was feeding Honest Kitchen. But with 2 of them it got pretty costly. Sometimes I mix the dry kibble with the Honest Kithchen. Mattie has horrible horrible skin issues. We switched about a month ago to Flint River Ranch dog food. They have a Trout and Potato that both dogs have done very well on. You can only buy it online. Our holistic vet/PT feeds it to her dogs and highly recommends it. It's a baked food so it digests better, and it's pretty cost effective. Lisa Frankie and Mattie |
I switched Maggie to raw because Henry's breeder required it and I am so glad she did. It completely solved Maggie's digestive issues. They eat less and digest better. I use the dehydrated stuff in a pinch but the dogs really love semi-frozen raw anything best of all. I buy meat and other parts (necks, backs, gizzards, etc.) at the grocery store. I buy frozen raw blends from my favorite pet food stores. I buy green tripe in bulk through a yahoo group coop. And I sometimes buy fresh butchered meets through another yahoo raw feeding coop. Edy gave me a book about making raw feeding simple. I will look later to see if I can find the title of it. People get caught up in the ratios but once you get into the rhythm, it is pretty easy. The key is to have a large freezer so you can buy in bulk or on sale. This group has tons of information but can be intimidating: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/rawfeeding/ This group is the companion group for discussions of other aspects of raw feeding beyond diet/nutrition: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/RawChat/ |
Thank you! I will be reading up on options this week. It is a good thing our second fridge arrived the other week. It makes buying ahead in larger quantities an option now. |
http://rawfed.com/myths/ I ordered from this place for a while but it was getting to expensive and found an alternative place way cheaper a local meat shop (see below). But they have good info like sample meals and a meat calculator. http://www.totallyrawdogfood.com/ordering-info-tools/sample-menu/ http://www.totallyrawdogfood.com/ordering-info-tools/meal-calculator/ I get most of my meat from below link, less than half the price and cheaper than what I was paying and still cheaper than dried food. If you dig around in your area you might find something similar. http://www.gatewaymeatmarket.com/ far right top is the raw dog food button. |
