Then he began being biscuit-less quickly......until I spied him high-tailing it to the west garden and returning with a muddy nose. With his cancer he is often more comfortable indoors until temps reach a moderate level in late morning. This morning I broke off a piece of my bagel and gave it to him. I didn't notice he slipped away. But later I saw something sticking out from under a rug in the hallway. There the bagel bit was carefully placed into the hall corner and tucked under the throw rug. A guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do. |

What a sweet story, burying the bagel under the rug. |
Ah, that is really sweet. |
I've not yet had a bury-er. Nothing around here goes unconsumed for more than 1.3 seconds kristine |
Our first OES, Sugarbear, buried all sorts of things. Outside they'd be bones - buried completely in a special corner of the yard. When that corner became too full, she started on another corner. She'd run and check on them to see if they were there frequently, but only infrequently went back to dig them up again. Inside THE PLACE to stash things was in the sofa, between the 3 pillows that made up the bottom section. Once in a while you would sit down and find out rather suddenly. Bones and toys were pushed into the seams between the pillows so well that one could never see them. Those she would pull out and chew on or play with ever once in a while. It's such a heavy duty instinct in those dogs that have it. Thankfully, most of our OES have not. Linda Z |
He must be like my husband. Eats to survive ...not lives to eat. How does one.. ESP a dog only eat part of something so good? We have leftovers for about 10 min. before I get it out and eat it again. Yuki is the same as her momma except she doesn't have a 10 min rule ....or a chew your food rule. |
None of our OES were ever buriers but Tripper, the basset, was terrible. Finally had to take things away as he ran all over the house looking for a place to bury things, in the bed, under whatever he could get under and he'd just carry on something terrible. After we got Butchy and they'd get a bone Tripper would have both of them in his mouth looking for a place to hide them without success. Finally neither one could have one. |
It's Harry's coonhound side, the OES side would eat anything presented. Jack would follow Harry, note the burial location and go get it a few minutes later. Harry had the muddy nose and mouth, Jack the muddy feet and mouth. We had to quit giving bones when Jack was here as he'd steal.....out of the other dogs' mouths and fight to defend his cache. MO sheepdog could squirrel one away and sneak it inside but the moment it hit a hard surface and made noise, Jack was on the prowl. Thankfully never have had a couch cache... cute to think about though. |
Burying the bagel I have never had a burying one either -but my daughter's Havanese buries things all over her house--and mine when he is here. She makes her bed after a nights sleep not thinking to look for things under the covers and finds lumps all at the bottom. He buries things while she sleeps. Her shoes are one of his favorite things to bury, he doesn't chew them but hides them in the couch, bed, under rugs and pillows. |
How about the corner in the kitchen? My Siberian would dig an imaginary hole, put the bone in, and than bury it, tapping down the imaginary dirt on top. He would then walk away sure his prize was safe. Fun to watch. |
Our dogs like to chew on shoes, and then bury them Jacob used to have snowboots... Not anymore... |
Does Harry ever go back for his treasures? Did the bagel ever get eaten? Tune in later today for more of: "As The Forum Turns." |
I just put it back. He's down the hall eating his cookie so probably saw me. Maybe he's curious |
Such a sweet story. Hugs to that boy. |
Son's min pin Dino used to always stash stuff. He would hide things in my flower beds if outside.(In the mulch). In the house he would steal stuff from candy dishes and hide them in the house. Now that he and Travis are back living w/ us, I was looking for that behavior again....but at age 13 I guess he stopped that craziness. Maybe found out the others stole his stash! Maggie (bluetick coonhound) digs holes outside and buries her bones. |
Pooh Bear would bury his treats. I was careful not to give him anything outside because I could see him trying to find a hiding spot. In the house, if I gave him a treat, he would bury it in our bed, or in the couch downstairs. I would find bones between the cushions. If I found something there and give it back to him then he would eat it. He would struggle hard to bury things in the couch, he would rub his nose raw once in a while. I would put a blanket on the couch to make the burying project easier for him. Now Angus on the other hand, treats..yum..yum..yum...gone! |
Mad Dog wrote: I've not yet had a bury-er. Nothing around here goes unconsumed for more than 1.3 seconds kristine I was going to say the same thing about here! The dog I grew up with used to hide pieces of buttered toast under the pillow of my bed. And the 1st dog Jim & I had after we were married used to hide his ice cubes behind the couch . A couple of hours later we'd hear all this commotion behind the couch & there he was sniffing all over the place looking for his ice cubes! By the way, neither of these were OES. |
Neither Brick or Zeke are bury-ers. However Brick will dig and dig and dig at carpet before he lays down. No idea why or what's going thru his mind when he does this. |
mark, zeke is making his bed as if he was in the wild. many breeds do this. oes and affies(ok,any & all breeds) with a fenced in yard will wait for bathing and grooming to be completed and then let their owner find them comfortly laying in hollowed out dirt or mud bed in the garden or under shrubbery.quite often the owner is overwhelmed by the skills said furkids possess at making such a fine form fitting bed and can't praise them enough. it's much more fun to give one of these talented kids a blanket and/or pillow in the house and watch the bed making skills. i've witnessed some arrange their blanky for up to a half hour. just one blanky and one pillow though, otherwise it will just be virginia style. that's where the kid just dives into the huge pile of pillows. |

It's Brick, the airedale, that digs at the carpet. He doesn't do it outside, though. If he wants to lay down, he just lays down in the grass & that's it. |
