Did you find everything o.k.??

I've noticed this is the new question cashiers ask. I realize they are given a script to follow. My employer is the king of scripting, but we also know how to reply when a customer says "no, I am not happy."

I went to JoAnn Fabrics yesterday. I had gotten a catalog from them and in the catalog were several things I wanted: a rubber stamp, Christmas paper, Christmas stickers. I also needed a ball of yarn and a display stand for a decorative plate.

I came away with a ball of yarn. There were no Christmas rubber stamps, paper or stickers. Nothing from the catalog was displayed. I couldn't find the plate stand, nor could I even find an employee to ask where the stands are. As I'm checking out, the casher asks me "did you find everything you wanted?" I looked her straight in the eye and said "no." She had no response. She just went uhuhuhuh, your total is $3.50.

If the company makes employees follow a script, for Pete's sake, teach them what to do when they get a response! Especially if it's not positive. The cashier could at least have said "I'm sorry." She really should have called over a manager.

Needless to say I won't be shopping at JoAnn Fabrics again.

I've noticed that, too.
I was just as JoAnn's Friday, they were just starting to set out Christmas stuff......other than fabrics which have been out quite awhile. I also got the great grandmother who told me all about her family as she had to scan 50 pieces of felt..........can't they just hit the x5 for each item? No galloon braid either.......so bummer.

I agree, the script is getting old. However at the grocery store when I've said no, they stop and write down what I was looking for.........much to the displeasure of those waiting behind me. So I just shut up.
Whaaaaaaaat? It seems like it would be common sense for the cashier to find out what the items were and either help you find them or refer you to someone who can. I've never been a cashier but that really seems like the obvious thing to do.
I find more and more, especially in the larger chain type stores that the general attitude is that they are doing you a big favor by allowing you to be their customer. It is really very sad...

Common sense seems to have gone right out the window. Good answer above and its what "I" would have done.
When the cashier ask me if I found everything, if I didn't, I say "I was looking for ____ and couldn't find it. Usually they will call someone to go and look or make a note. If I'm in a hurry I'll tell them "I couldn't find so and so, but I'll look for it next time." I don't just say "no" and hope they will want to extract what I was looking for out of me, because most won't and feel ok she said "no' so get her out of here. lol
I'm shocked too they didn't reply differently. I'd be disturbed by that response.

Not me. I speak up. I figure if the people behind me want to go to a different line-- they can. When it's them that needs help finding something, I'll be patient . Customer service has become a thing of the past... and I figure if they open the door by asking, I'll step in it, if I need help.

I would have trotted to the Customer Service Counter Paula-- and relayed the response. If no one speaks up, then they can't fix it. Not that speaking up is a guarentee, but at least they get a shot at redemption.
I'm usually one to speak up but I was so ticked off, plus I knew the advertised stuff wasn't in the store so why bother? It's not so much that the items weren't in the store, it was the total indifference of the cashier. If you are going to script, do it all the way! Don't do half-@ssed stuff and expect customers to think "wow, that's service."
I dunno, maybe it's a guy thing... but I keep shopping until I find everything I came for, or I have already hunted down an employee or manager to ask about it. Then I don't really respond to any automaton-like questions by a cashier, because if I didn't find it I've already investigated.

I usually distract them with asking about dogs, the weather, why their stupidly large store is so empty of customers...
