You need to know something about me. I adopted my people, Jean and Larry, about 8 months ago. I used to live at Gentle Giants Rescue with many doggy friends. I like walks. I get at least 2 per day total-ing about 3 miles. I do not pull on the leash (at least not very much at all) and I am not usually beside the knee of the person with me. Usually, I am out in front – I was bred to tell my charges where to go. I like to sniff things. I go to my walker person or change direction when I hear “with me” or a gentle “tsk tsk”. Sometimes, I recognize left, right, or straight. If I want to get on with the walk when we’ve stopped for something, I usually take the leash in my mouth. I am very friendly. In my first month at my new home, I met 100 different people and many doggies in the park across the street, in the little mall with the grocery store, and at pet stores. My people stopped counting part way through the second month at about 160. I have been to doggy day camp multiple times and the people at doggy day camp are happy to see me. I do not like getting a bath at the PetSmart, but I always get a really good report card about my behavior. One time, I met all the other doggies and the entire staff of the PetSmart. On my neighborhood walks, I have many doggy friends – Charlie a cocker spaniel, Benz a Yorkie, Sam (Samantha) 125 pounds of black Russian Terrier, Izzy a Golden, Selo a Pyr, and others. Today, I made a new friend – Kona a 4 month old cockapoo. I had to lie down for Kona to get comfortable coming close enough to do that doggy sniffy thing. At my Park there are two preschools, a day care, a private school, and two big play structures. On weekends, there are volleyball tournaments, family gatherings, and picnics. I have to regularly visit the park to make sure my flock is safe and happy. I have made many friends at the park – from a few months old to very elderly. I stand still so people can pet me. I press up against the fence at one of the preschools so the kids can pet me through the fence. With groups of kids, I stand especially still so they can find my ears and lift up my fall to look at my eyes – one blue, one brown. For people, I am really good at figuring out if they want to meet me or not. There were workers in our house for many days after a pipe burst. I met them all. After a couple of days, I didn’t even bark when they came to the door in the morning. The workers gave me skritches and rumples. With other dogs, friendly sometimes gets me in a little trouble – I want to meet the other doggy who does not want to meet me or who thinks I’m a threat. I pretty much ignore them. I went to the bank and laid down by the window for a long time while my people did something I didn’t understand. I got rumples from staff and customers. Sometimes I had to stand up first. I do not know many tricks. I know “wait”. “Stay” is harder – there are things to see, people to meet, and smells to figure out. I barely fetch. I can sit really well – my people joke that I was taught to sit by a Marine drill instructor. I like treats. I sit really well for a treat. I self feed. My people always keep food in my dish and I eat when I want. Some days, I eat a lot; other days, not so much. I have weighed between 72 and 74 pounds for all the time I have lived here, so I’m eating correctly. Now that I’ve learned to sit still on the scale, my weight will fluctuate less. I like to ride in the car because there’s always an adventure at the end. I’m a good rider. I’m pretty patient if I have to wait alone. With the windows partly down in the parking lot, I have met people – my head is out the window and I know not to bark. Barking – I do it when I want something but my people are very good at figuring out what I want before I even want it. My best doggy friend, Moto, is a mix of chocolate lab and American opportunist. Moto and her pet parent visit every Wednesday for dinner and they stay over. That gives us time to play together. We share food. We go for walks together. We sleep in each other's beds. Sometimes, I stay at Moto's house when my family goes away. Sometimes, Moto stays at my house. I like to cuddle. After a while, I often get too warm and have to move. I’m a little goosey having my feet brushed. I’m getting better. Sometimes my people call me Matsy or Matsy Bear – usually when I’m having a really good day. I like that. My people took me to Sedona AZ at the end of October. It was a really long drive. We stayed in a place with 2 stories so I got to practice stairs a lot. I’m really good at stairs now. Bogie, sheltie, and Walker, labradoodle, were also there and we became friends. We played in the parking lot and explored shrubbery together – we’re all males and you know what “explore” means. I went on a wilderness jeep ride – it was scary and exciting, but then I learned how to balance and it was fun. I discovered I really like shopping – Jean goes inside while Larry and I explore outside. We went to an art fair – there were other dogs and kids and adults to meet. I went to a classy shopping place, Tlaquepaque (pronounced Tla-keh-pah-keh), where I was invited into stores – cool. I met a little white fuzzy dog who came right up to me, a husky, a little black dog, and a lab. I met many little people, some so young I call them people puppies. I had a good time and I got a really good report card on my behavior at an overnight with a vet at a ranch with St Bernards and horses. I’ve been to 3 pet-friendly restaurants. All had water bowls. My favorite restaurant has a shady patio and provides individual water bowls instead of a community water bowl. In November, I am going to start being a Furry Friends Therapy Assistant. I don’t know what that means yet, but I’m pretty sure I’ll like the “Friends” part. My vet, Dr. Glynn, suggested Furry Friends the first time he met me. My vaccinations are up to date.
