They can be very painful. One of my sister's St. Bernards has been plagued with them since they adopted him. After ALL OF MY URGING for the last few years, they finally had cultures and scrappings done. Can't remember exactly what all he has but he is on 300 mil of benedryl, he got a shot and has to get another in 2 weeks and then another 2. I think it is a type of mange and other thing with his hot spots, He is also on prednisone for 12 days cepheloxin antibiotic. He reached a point he has been canabalizing himself. It spread not only up his back legs and now his hips. They keep shaving him and I'm sure that is an irritation. Bernie's legs are also bandaged and dressings are changed several times a day. He seems to understand they are trying to help and he cooperates. Just sayin...............I would have it cultured. |
I agree with getting a culture of the lesion, especially if it's been there for awhile. Antibiotics are only helpful if they are targeted to the correct bacteria, and without a culture, you'll never know if the proper antibiotic is prescribed. Also, it might be fungal, or yeast-based, and not bacterial at all, in which case, antibiotics are not helpful. It can take up to a week to get the results back, as it takes that long to grow out the cooties, and then find which antibiotics they are susceptible to, so a culture is best done as soon as possible.
