Wow! I hope someone replies to you! I am only going to agree with you and hope someone has some ideas! LOL Does the babypowder work, I had never thought of that? Gucci could use a little as well!

When don't usually let our dogs get much more than 3 1/2 or 4 inches of hair. After about 2 or 2 1/2 inches, we trim under the chin to about an inch to keep water transfer from the dish to the pantleg at a minimum.
It doesn't work for that purpose, but it sure keeps the house a little drier, and looks just fine to us. I don't think anyone outside the sheepdog world would notice. |
Just be sure you don't use a talc-based powder to dry up that beard. The clouds of "powder" it makes can be aspirated into the lungs of your dog. It also applies to babies.
To answer your question, what works for us is just washing their face periodically. I have a pet hose that is attached to our shower that makes it easy to plop Yuki in and JUST wet/wash her face. That way I'm in and out within 5-10 minutes. The bad thing about that. If you always only let your dog dry to the "damp-dry" zone ...then it can potentially cause the bacteria to form that is making the beard stink. Possible solution (used a lot in other breeds that stain): EYE ENVY the same thing used for tear stains can be used to get rid of stinky odors in the beard (the liquid AND the powder). Applying the powder after the liquid prevents the beard from getting all that yucky stinky stuff. It's very expensive though for such a small supply, so maybe baby powder works just as well. |
I was going to ask the same question about the beard. I just gave Beau a bath a couple of days ago and now his beard smells. He chews on raw hides everyday. Do you think that contributes to the smell? |
I'm sure it can contribute since little pieces get stuck in them (okay, let's be real... all over..hehe). |
Hi,
Don't want to alarm anyone but Merlin too had a stinky beard ( more than the usual stinky, I mean) I kept washing it with a damp cloth, tried different methods and nothing seemed to work. One day returning home I smelt the most horrible smell when I walked into the house. I traced the smell to him! Still not understanding why his beard smelt so bad I took him to the vet. Turned out these guys have a fold in their lips..(on the side) and he had a small cut which had gotten infected afterwards by food debris. The vet had to drain it and Merlin was given a dose of antibiotics. As I said, don't mean to alarm anyone but thought I should post this just in the rare chance that some owners might miss something regarding lips or teeth. Dogs with teething problems tend to drool more. I didn't think to lift up the fold on his lip and it's easy to miss with all that hair. Pups may just be drooling more just as a baby will when its teething..so could also be that. I agree with Joahaeyo, I wouldn't use baby powder as it's really dangerous to the lungs - knowing first hand as I've had lung surgery in the past as a result of using it. Who woulda thought? I'd been noticing the same thing with Clyde so I started picking through to make sure there was nothing living in there. Well, nothing was actually breathing, but under the top layer of his hair on his snout, going down towards the beard, there was a whole lot of funk all snarled up and matted in there. It surprised me because I'd been keeping on pretty well and must have neglected that part. The top layer was just so thick, it was hidden!
Needless to say, some trimming was in order and that helped a bit. I trimmed around his lips, which I wouldn't suggest if you were showing, but as a pet, you can't even tell and now he isn't sucking on hair all the time. Ironically, after all this effort, I found his beard still stunk. Like someone else said, it's just in that never dry time of year with all the drinking he does so, short of cutting it off, I don't think it's avoidable. How lame would it look to trim just the beard to an inch or 2? Anyone tried it? |
The one inch look is okay... It looks a little bit goofy if the rest of him is longer. About an inch and a half is probably the best compromise between really short and letting it long to get really gross.
A friend of mine has a Newfoundland and because he drools so much, we made him a bandana from terrycloth. (Actually it took a whole towel, this dog is huge!) The bandana is always there for quick cleanups and drying his mouth so that might be an option too. |
boo had the most horrible smell coming from her face after a trip to the vet we were told it was dermatitis. she also has the folds in her lips it only affects one side of her mouth. |
