Dog Park Part 3

We had Winston's third visit to a dog park and Dexter's fourth today.

They are getting more comfortable and outgoing but still the oddest acting dogs there! We hoped they would zoom their like they do at home but no..............

They act like they don't even know each other, kind of reminiscent of the 13-year old brother ignoring the bothersome 6-year old brother at the park because it isn't cool hanging out with your little brother. Today Winston didn't pay any attention to Dexter either.

Dexter's job today was to keep other dogs away from us. He stayed within about 30 feet of us and if a dog came up to us he would come right over and herd them away. He was "nice" about it but refused to let any other dog get pets from us.

Winston tried to play but today just drove home my perception that other dogs just don't play like sheepies. Dogs would run and play but when Winston started running with them they would quit, often in a near submissive way. Other dogs would rear up or play crouch but when Winston tried to join in they would walk away. Maybe Dexter is right; Winston is a geeky little brother!

This happens to Chowder all the time.

What is it about sheepies?
We are working with our sheepie on his dog park skills. For the first few times he only played with our other dog and his rambunctious play seemed to scare other (even bigger dogs) off... He is only 5 months old and pretty small. Then he tried to herd a chihuahua... And then we went home.

Keep at it! I know my sheepie is by far the most entertaining dog at the dog park. People have commented about what clowns they seem to be.

Btw one of my friends dogs has a major problem playing with dogs it out tails, I know it freaks some dogs out, he had an issue and was scared by Leonard when they first met. He apparently has this problem with a lot of dogs who don't have tails.
Yup, anytime we have gone to a dog park our boys have always annoyed the heck out of the other dogs. :-(

When he's on a leash, Winston gets sooo over-hyper and bouncy and excited that the other dogs (and people) shy away. He does this leaping in place kind of thing.

Running free he barks and herds and is generally a pain in the neck.

This sounds like lily.

God forbid someone is playing fetch with their lab. I swear, She thinks she is an Old English Labdog. Labradors are the new sheep.....
Floyd Loves other dogs! The problem is he loves them too much. He is about 1.5 years old, and whenever we go to the dog park, he acts like its the greatest thing in the world. The problem is the other dogs are no where nearly as excited about him entering as he is. And God forbid other dogs start running around, he will immediately chase them down to herd them into place.

Hopefully he calms down soon, people can get annoyed with his over excitement.
Sheepies do seem to behave differently than other dogs at dog parks.

Monty likes to visit other dogs. He will run up to a dog or group of dogs and then stand their upright and stiff. He never wiggles his tail when meeting dogs.

He then sniffs butts and is respectful.

If he gets into chase mode he will bark, which can put the other dog off and I always worry the dog owner will think Monty is being aggressive, which is not, just vocal.

If two dogs are playing, he is in there barking at them.

He really enjoys visiting other dogs but it is not so much to play but to see what's going on.

Probably a good thing he doesn't get into play mode like with buster because he would be tackling the other dog and dragging it around by the scruff of the neck :D
oh poor sheepies it never bodes well for them. I have never seen my guys being chased by other dogs; always them doing the chasing. Or barking at other dogs playing as well.
