antibiotics for diarrhea?

I'm still trying to get a handle on what's going on with Alice's poor stomach, maybe someone here finds some of this familiar?

Anyway, Alice gets intermittent diarrhea (sometimes very bad watery, mucousy, etc.). I've taken her in to the vet numerous times over the years (and numerous vets). Bacteria was found in her stool twice when she was still fairly young (~2 years old) and was treated with antibiotics, but stool samples have never shown anything since. She went through the parvo treatment, 'just in case', and it made no difference. She was diagnosed positive for Lyme's about 2 years ago and quickly treated for it and has had no symptoms since (I only noticed when her back legs suddenly got very stiff- talk about heartbreaking...). She was checked for Lyme's again this year and still tested positive, but I was told that there could be trace amounts of the disease, but nothing that will ever be a problem.

So, with that background, she still has her diarrhea (a couple times a month). I've found that giving her an antibiotic will calm her stomach down immediately. I have no idea why, nor does my vet. However, it works without fail. I've tried pepto and some dog-specific pepto-like stuff, with little improvement.

I keep her on Nutro's sensitive stomach formula (seems to work slightly better than previous formulas) and she gets no table scraps or anything else.

Lately I've been wondering if she might just have some kind of doggy anxiety attacks? I left her in the care of a relative while I went on vacation one year and she had a horrible attack of diarrhea the entire week I was gone. She has a pretty spoiled and easy life (lots of playing, meets other dogs, I even go home at lunch just to take her for a walk!). Maybe too spoiled?

Well, thanks for reading! Maybe you have some thoughts on the matter?

It sounds like coccidia or giardia or perhaps both to me. The vet needs to check stool samples daily for several days in a row to get a diagnoses, and sometimes even then it can be missed because they aren't shed in the stool "all the time" or even everyday.
The difficulty to diagnose in my opinion means it is easier to simply treat the dog for both. With a dog such as yours who sounds like she has a somewhat compromised imune system, it is even more likely to be coccidia and or giardia.
If you live in an area with lots of birds I would say giardia. my 4 all had it and many vets don't know what it is. If it looks like sausage casing that's most likely what it is. There is series of 2 injections given 2 weeks apart that should take care of a giardia problem.

My baby Tabata is having the same problems as yours, she got diarrea every month and is kind of weird . I don't let her have anything else but her regular dry food (Science Diet) , but even with all my care she's always been like this. Yesterday I went to the vet because sometimes I gave her Pepto and she got better but this time it's been 2 weeks that she is with this problem and I went to the vet and they gave me some antibiotics and some prescription food , well she is better now Dr said that this diarrea is caused for bacteria but I dont really know why???? I start thinking that this situation is for anxiety, she is so nervous and afraid about thunderstorms and some sounds , even that she is the most spoiled and loved dog in earth and I tried to socialized her in so many ways she stills afraid of every weird sound .
I really believe that this problems with her stomack are caused by last week thunderstorms, rain and sounds. Anyway I talk to the vet and he suggest me to give her some medicine 1 hour before the storms just to calm her a little beat or he said that I should get a tape of weird sounds like rain , wind etc....and let her listen to them constantly so she can get use to it and control a little her anxiety.

I really hope your baby gets better soon!!!!
Besides Coccidia and Giardia could also be E-coli wich is in everyone`s intestins. If he had a massive infection with E-coli and never treated, this becomes very resistent and hard to get rid off. Take some more tests.
