And it's always Eevee who gets blood all over herself and looks all damaged, when Bailey is the one that actually gets hurt. Do you guys have any ideas on how to make sure Bailey heals up? Last time she only had one itty bitty mark and she took good care of it on her own, but now she has 3 and I don't think she can even lick one of them. It makes me sad that Bailey gets hurt ): Poor girl. |

Ouch Jade!!!! Sorry that you are in the middle so to speak. I don't know what to offer, but huge hugs for you and the girls. Someone will have the right answer. |
Ouch! When you say Bailey has three marks on him and are wondering if they'll heal on their own...do you mean bite marks? Are they deep? I'm always thinking of infection. Hope everyone heals up soon. |
She has 3 bite marks, they aren't very deep. One is very small and looks like it healed already, there is another one on her chest by her leg, and another one on the leg, those are the ones I'm worried about. She can't reach the one on her chest very well. I read somewhere that you can put neosporin on them? I thought I'd ask before I do that though. |
I also don't have advice although this search engine on here is very useful as it has happened to several people. I'm so sorry |
Violet and Asia got into it a few days ago too, so I feel your apprehension. No blood was drawn here, but I use the same stuff on the girls that I use on myself if I had an opened sore. I really like hydrogen perxoide (sp?) because it doesn't sting on application. I hope your dogs are doing ok. |
They seem to do doing better today, no fights since last night so that's good! I was told not to use hydrogen peroxide, just water. |

Since I live a very warm climate, I'm very paranoid about getting an infection in any opening in the skin and Hydro has always worked for me animal and human. |
Violet - I used hydrogen peroxide for years, till my vet told me a few years back that it impedes healing. Who knew? She suggested alcohol. The rubbing kind you can get at any drug store, not the kind you'd want to down afterwards if your dogs got into it. For something more serious, betadine would probably be better. I used that a lot for horses, but can't bring myself to touch a white coat with that vile stuff Then again, if it was something serious enough to require betadine we'd probably be at the vets anyway. Jade, neosporin is fine for small, superficial lacerations. And I'm so sorry they've been getting into it Not sure what to tell you about how to deal with it except be careful not to get bit. PS - simply irrigating (cleaning with water) a superficial, open wound like Jade does is fine. I think it's the "old timers" among us who have to feel like we're killing the germs How many of us had mothers who used to drag out that dreaded mercurochrome? God, I hated that stuff. Kristine |
kristine is older than she looks. |
Re: hydrogen peroxide - You can use it to cleanse wounds, what you need to avoid is using it FULL STRENGTH. If used full strength, it causes tissue damage - it's just too strong. However, if you mix it 50:50 with water (sterile water is better, but regular tap works in a pinch), it is good. We use that on human trauma patients for wound cleansing. It doesn't have to be measured exactly 50:50 - close is good enough. But, even more importantly (whatever the irrigant is) you need to flush the wound out well. Some force may be needed. I keep large (30 or 60ml) syringes on hand just for a situation that need flushing out. Water poured on, or from a regular faucet may not have enough force to really clean. And for really dirty wounds (like abrasions, with stuff that may get embedded, like dirt), you need to actually flush and scrub. And yes, in most instances (exceptions are some burns, deep punctures, etc) using regular ABX ointment is perfectly good. How are you guys doing today? |
She seems to be doing well, the hole that was the worst is getting smaller and looks like it's fine. It doesn't appear to be infected at all, which is good! We've also managed to avoid any fights. We're trying to handle it by avoiding situations that will cause fights, since I now know that they'll go nuts over a new person, they are getting introduced one at a time and only get to be together around the new person after they calm down and get past the jumping phase. |

Kristine Kristine, I would have rather had the mercurochrome! My mother always used the merthiolate and that stuff burned like hell! I swear used that to torture us for payback. LOL! Cindy |

Cindy YIKES! Even with the mercurochome my mom was all too cheerful when she had to apply it Some kind of sadistic maternal thing? KB |
, My Mom used to us Bactine which stung. I'll stick to Hydro. Alcohol still stings. |
I think I must be the only kid who never got cleaned with any of those things! I think my mom used hydrogen peroxide one time, when I cut my head open, but other than that we always just rinsed it off with plain ol' water. |
