So...back from the vet. His xrays don't show any major anomalies. His hips look fair, his spine looks good, no major calcification anywhere but he is obviously hurting and uncomfortable. Vet decided maybe he just jumped wrong sometime and wrenched something and put him on a one week protocol of rest, Tramadol and Rymadyl. If he shows no improvement, then maybe try prednisone or a neurology referral. Simon is 7 and this has caused me much concern. Last night when he seemed to exhibit a lot of muscle weakness, I was so scared I stayed up with him all night in case it looked like I had to take him to the ER vet. this is probably because I had another OES rescue several years ago who presented with rear muscle weakness and I waited until the next day to get him to the vet and when I woke up he was gone... Anyway, I think I'm overreacting with the worry. When I say muscle weakness now..he falls...a lot. Shopping for this weekend....rugs for the laminate and tile floors, maybe a new orthopedic bed? Do I need to think about a sling? He's 90 lbs and lifting him is really hard for me. Am I jumping the gun? Any thoughts? He's still kinda dopey from the sedative today for the xrays and is being quiet and I know I have to keep him kinda quiet for a few days...thank goodness he is crate trained. I know this is not, for now, life threatening but my baby is hurting....... |

Oh Mary, I'm so sorry you guys are going through this. Sounds like the vet is testing the drugs to see if it eliminates pain as the cause. Another possibility in my mind is Degenerative Myelopathy. Did the vet mention or test for that as a possibility? We had a similar discussion with another member and I described how you and/or your vet can make a neurological test for DM here: viewtopic.php?t=25730 |
Wow, Ron, thank you. We did not discuss Degenerative Myelopathy, I totally forgot about that. I agree, she is trying to see if pain is the cause. But she did caution me to watch and said if he doesn't show drastic improvement over the next few days she would advise a referral to a neurologic vet. I've kept him so quiet since yesterday I haven't seen anymore falling episodes. Yesterday when he and Bella were trying to play he just kept falling until he got so distressed, I stopped the play and separated them. That was before the vet visit. I haven't allowed that kind of play since then. He's sleeping now. His favorite sleeping place is the couch, of course, but he can't get up there very well now, so he's on his bed. (which make Bella happy, lol, since the couch is now hers...) I'll try the test while still watching him carefully. I'm just really hoping its just a case of a temporary old man wrenching his back and with rest and meds he'll bounce back. He's finally, after years of work, developed into a sweet, sweet, loving boy and I hate to see him hurting. Everyone at my vet's office absolutely loves him, he is such a sweetie. |
Bailey has had rear end issues for a couple of years - arthritis. Probably due to Riley jumping on her. If the other dogs run into her or bump her, she is likely to have her rea end go down. She used to be first out the door, now she is last. We have carpet runners at the lake. She knows where they are and won't go in or out the doors that don't have them. When we get back home, she hates walking on the tile without runners - I'm still trying to talk my husband ino letting us put runners in the breakfast room and dog room. The wonderful orthopedic bed we got Bailey is only used by one of the cats. Fingers cross this works well! |
When Jake was about 8 he started on paid meds. We took him off for a while because his tummy couldn't take them and he was unable to get off of the floor. Three days back on piroxicam and he was "good as new", or good as could be, I suppose. But the difference was absolutely amazing. He was with us for another 5 years after that! |
Poor baby hard when they cant pin point what is causing it. Have the vet check for what Ron mentioned, did the vet check for a pinched nerve along the spine? A pinched nerve in that region can cause backend failure/pain and affect the rear quite easily, did the vet physically go along the spine and apply pressure to see if any niggly areas there?. Hopefully being on anti-inflams and resting will solve what is going on with simon. At the moment too while on the meds even to potty him outside, do it on a lead so he cant run, jump or do anything silly for at least a week and you have total controll of his movement so if it is just a soft tissue injury he cant aggrivate it & gives it time to heal. Keeping all paws crossed here |
I have no advice, I just hope he gets better soon! |
