I'm taking my pup in to the groomer next week- it's a first for both of us, and I'm a little nervous. Alice has had a beautiful full coat since she was a puppy (now a ripe old 5 1/2 years), but the summer heat here in Boston is a little too much for her long locks. I don't want her shaved entirely, so what do I tell the groomer? and how would they do it? with scissors? I would think that clippers would leave the coat too short, unless they have a 6" attachment? I just spoke with the groomer to schedule her in, and they are familiar with OES and have a couple regulars. Should I bring photos of cute hair-do's from the 'net? Do I ask to see their photos? Run a background check? Am I being completely rediculous?! Also, what do I do to prepare? Obviously, I'll make sure she is matt-free and brushed out nicely. Should I give here a bath first? Or after? So many questions! Thanks, nick |

I had heard from another OES chat site I'm on that bringing pictures is a really great idea! I myself hadn't thought of it but I really think that would work great! And of course, making them PROMISE not to shave them! I have a friend that is a groomer, she lives in British Columbia, that says that most groomers are just not up for the extra work! They would tell people that they had to use the clippers, only because it takes a lot less time! My understanding is that there are not clippers that would leave an inch (I am NOT an expert on this topic, AT ALL) and the only way to do it is to use a comb and sissors.
I hope your groomer really will take the time for you! GOOD LUCK! |
Tell your groomer to keep at least 2 inches of hair to avoid sunburns for the first weeks if your doggies stay outside. They look great in short hair too!
Sir Gucci's Mom is quite right, make sure your groomer will NOT shave your doggie down and if you can, bring some pics of what you want to look your doggie like. The puppy cut where you leave like 2-3 inches or so is super cute and easy to mantain while it grows back to full coat. |
We used to call it the scissored puppy cut. Just tell them you'd like it scissored off to about 6" (or whatever length you'd like). |
Thanks everyone! I'm feeling a little more confident about the ordeal now.
I'll put up some pics of the aftermath. nick |
definately be specific!!!!
My son went with a friend of his to a groomer, and decided to take Dunkn(his shih tzu) along......The groomer asked him what he would like done, he told her bath, nails, trim, ect.... Dunkn came out of there with a cocker spaniel cut!!!! ugh! I also took Tecumseh for nails, ears, and fur removed from between the pads, they kept insisting that the trim came with that, after about 5 min of trying to express the importance of not touching a hair on him besides inside ear hair and paw pad hair, they still insisted that the trim was needed needless to say, i left and just did it myself |
