Ahh just recently I said it's very rare for a Sheepie to be seen at our shelters and this is the second one that's appeared. The other was fortunate as he was quickly adopted due to his age. This one, Poor old guy think he may be hard pressed to be adopted as they list him as senior. If anyone is interested..please let me know. The website is http://www.bcspca.com On the left hand side click on shelters and then LowerMainland - then Vancouver. You just need to click on other dogs needing foster homes and his pic will be shown. He's also listed on petfinder. I wish I wasn't so computer illiterate and could post his pic in here. Sorry about that. Marianne |

Hey thanks Max!!! I was hoping someone would make it way easier for members to see it!! Yeah Max!!
I haven't heard from the shelter as of yet as to my email I sent them, asking for more information. I'm kinda bummed out at the moment - the OES rescue up here won't take him as he's classified as a MIX. Dunno he looks pure OES to me and why should it matter? Marianne |
He looks so sad Uncle Pete, how far away are you? I hope someone gives a great last home. |
He does look sad but I'm sure he'll be a real happy camper real soon. I'm about 3,000 miles away. I'm sure someone will show shortly to adopt him.
Uncle Pete |
I emailed the shelter twice and asked about him but no one had got back to me, so I figured he had found a home. Nope, he's still there and is waiting a home to spend his last remaining years just waiting to be pampered. Lets all cross our fingers it works out for him. The rescue up here won't take him as he's labled as a X. Breaks my heart to see an old guy like this in those conditions.
Marianne and the boys |
there must be someone out there for this sweet guy. |
Any news about Riviera? I couldn't take him as I couldn't handle losing another dog in the next few years. Too soon after Bentley. I hope someone has adopted him Lynda |
They have added some great videos to his post on Petfinder. He looks like he's very small. He's playing with an American Eskimo dog in one shot and they're pretty close in size.
He looks to be very much an OES, he has the greatest tail/butt wiggle! |
Okay just a quick note to keep you guys updated...now have written them 3 times with no replies.....GRRR
Can't get this boy outta my mind,,,one of the members of this forum expressed interest in him and lives in Alberta..so would mean figuring out how to transport him. I'd also have to purchase him from the shelter as I'm pretty sure they won't just turn him over to me. Anyhow still haven't got a chance to see him (the shelter is about 1 hr drive from me ) and I've been having van problems. There is another rescue on the Island as well that may take him if that doesn't work out and lastly my friends mom also expressed interest..but she's 78 and so Riviera would definately have to be very old or very calm for her to take him. So that's it...I don't have any info regarding his health or age...first things first....get van fixed today..actually rushing out the door to the mechanics...then trip to the shelter (hopefully) if the van is fixed. I planned on going tomorrow. I'll keep you guys posted. >>Please let it be the radiator hose and not the radiator. Marianne and the boys |
Poor Marianne! Good luck with the van, I hope it wasn't anything too pricey... |
Thanks Bailey's mom!
Just returned and yeah!! had the hose replaced ..so still keeping my fingers crossed that solved the problem! I was a tad worried about having to drive on a bridge and freeway to that particular shelter. I'll go tomorrow and check this boy out. Marianne Marianne |
Hi,
Me again. Got the hose fixed but having other van problems so still haven't seen him in person. I did finally manage to get through to a real person after trying for a month and getting automated calls. Here's what they said. He was a stray, picked up wondering the streets. He looked as if he'd been there some time. His coat was very matted. He's one of the shelter favorites and the staff have grown fond of him. He seems to be going deaf and he may have cataracts (The shelter does not have the funds to have a more thorough exam - although he was given a clean bill of health by the vet at the shelter.) His only behavioral issue they observed was he startles easy if approached from behind and touched. This is why he would not be recommended to go to a home with young kids and may be the result of partial deafness. They believe he's senior but have no info as to his age as he was picked up on the streets. Lets keep hoping this boy gets the forever home he deserves. I'm going to keep trying to eventually get over there and see him. Marianne and the boys |
Me Again! I went to see him and OH HE'S THE SWEETEST BOY!!!!
I was shocked when I peered into his cage as there bundled up in a big bed was this tiny dog. He looked identical to a sheepie but it appeared as if a demented fairy godmother had played a funny joke. Where's the rest of his legs? I couldn't believe it...looks like a sheepie..but about the size of a 3-4 month old. Yes, I would agree he is mixed...as his back fur remains dark, while his face and chest have the grey fur. At first I suspected the mix may have been with a terrier but then viewing him from the back and concerning his size, I thought of perhaps a Cocker Spaniel. I can't be sure ..but whatever the mix is..it was a small dog. The staff were more than accomodating and you can tell he was a favorite and they really wished to find him a home as he's been there a long time. I will write what I found out during the time I spent with him as they allowed me to take him away from the shelter to spend some one on one time with him. He originally pulled a bit for the first block. Although his size didn't make this a huge factor as I'm so used to the bigger dogs. It could also be that he was excited about going for a walk. He didn't pull walking back to the shelter. We met other dogs along the way...some offleash and he greeted each with the classic sheepie bum wiggle. The staff said he does seem to have issues with grooming, although when he was found he was so badly matted and dirty the mats were pulled tight against his skin which would have been painful. They said the mats were dirt encrusted too as if he had been neglected for some time. I ran my hands across his entire body and even pulled one tiny mat dangling from under his chin and he seemed fine with it. He had been clipped short since they found him..but appears scruffy as the groom job he was given appeared to have been done quickly. The staff said they suspect he has some hearing loss as he startles easily if suddenly touched from behind. I clapped my hands and slapped my legs to get his attention on our walk and he looked up everytime. I had snuck a piece of sausage in my purse previous to visiting him, when my sister and I had brunch at a buffet. He grabbed it quickly but did not hurt my fingers when doing so. After that he was my best buddy as he sat beside me on this hill overlooking the shelter and just leaned against me. He sat when I gave the signal, (hands above his head as if I had a treat) and he did this several times. The staff said the only time he appeared agitated was when they caught him going through the garbage(they often keep him up front with them) and grabbed him by the collar, he snapped at air, but stopped immediately when he saw who or what held him. Lastly, the most touching thing about today was sitting on that grassy hill, he kept rolling on his back and wiggling in the grass and big smiles on his face. He allowed me to give him belly rubs. Why hasn't he been adopted? The staff say many people have shown interest but have not pursued it when they realize he is a senior. This is complete guesswork on my part , I thought perhaps he may be 6 years. The staff said they thought a year or two older. Hard to tell as he has the greyish sheepie face. I rubbed his hips to see if he appeared sore and again he allowed me to do this with no noticable difference. His eyes do have that old look however and he may have some sight impairment..again I can't be sure as he walked fine on the leash. Today was such a bittersweet day, as this park, the exact hill and same shelter where I had adopted Shaggy 16 years before. Sitting with him and having him lean on me..brought back so many memories of the day I saw her and they allowed me to take her for a walk to get acquainted. She was a little sheepie too. I wish I could adopt him myself but know 3 males including grumpy Blue, who still has issues with Panda, would be too much. Lets hope he finds a forever home Marianne and the boys |
i love old dogs, one day i will start a rescue called "senior scamps" after my shih tzu scamp, whom I sent over the rainbow bridge last may after seventeen glorious years.
if there was a way of getting the old boy to me i would take him, unfortunately I am in ohio. |
Oh, he sounds wonderful! Can he travel to Ohio? We could all chip in for fare. Is it possible to donate to have him taken to a outside vet? Maybe know his actual age etc.
i would love to take him too (LOVE SENIORS). My 2 males have issues w/ each other so i am sure 3rd male wouldn't work. please keep us posted on this boy, whatever mix he is, he is ADORABLE!!! sue |
Hi Sue and Roofus's mom,
Just like you guys I also have a fondness for seniors and have made up my mind that after my lastest batch ..which now consist of 3 dogs and 4 cats, I will focus on seniors. The shelter were Riviera is staying is, the only one out of the many shelters that has an animal hospital which is open for public appointments right on the same site. They only give the strays a quick medical once over, so for futher testing I'd have to get permission from the manager of the shelter to walk over there with him and offer to pay the cost. I had also mentioned this site and asked if I would be allowed to adopt him on behalf of someone else as normally you have to sign a contract saying you will not give the pet away to someone else. They had previously told me that would allow me to do this as I was working on behalf of rescue. (Although I'm not official, but working on my own). I'm not sure what the status of this shelter is...as I know the one in my immediate area has gone back to kill. They had a three month moretorium last year and were so flooded with animals they went back to the kill policy. Each municipality is different so I'm not sure what the status of this one is. I'm actually more concerned about Scuffy whom you just posted about which you said is in a kill shelter and they have 175 dogs! That's so disheartening. I suspect Riviera is safe for a while as it was so obvious the staff cared for him a great deal, yet want him in a forever home to spend his old age in comfort. I had told the staff I would be back next week with Panda to see how Riviera plays with other dogs. They said he ignores cats the majority of the time. I'll continue to keep you guys posted. I know Merlin and Panda would be okay with him, Blue, however really has issues with other dogs or else I'd even foster this old boy. Roofus's mom..and C's mom who also expressed interest (both long distances) I know miracles do come true..look at what happened with me and Panda..he came all the way to me from Hong Kong! Never would have thought so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :O) Marianne |
any updates on Riveria? hoping, sue |
Me Again,
He's still there. Went to check on him today. I feel badly I wasn't able to make it sooner but am still having problems with my van and am nervous about the hours drive..as it involves going over a long bridge. I was rushed today as I wanted to just check if he was still there, before heading home to beat the rush hour. I had wanted to spend time there and ask questions but all the staff were busy. If it weren't for Blue who is continuing to have issues with Panda, I would adopt Riviera. I have written letters and called everyone I know to see if they would be interested in him. Still hoping someone will want him. He's such an adorable boy. What a coincidence just noticed you were asking while I was typing this out! Same mindset! Marianne |
i thought Kaye might get him? i know she mentioned him to me. I also know she is overwhelmed w/ sheepies right now. i am hoping she still plans to get him. He is so far from me in NJ. I will ask Ingrid if she has any ideas. sue |
has anyone posted him to other sites, like OES-L? sue |
Hoping for news?
Would it help at all if I cross-posted him to our site???? Would need the shelter's permission. Sue |
I'd be more than happy to help transport him to Ohio . . . . I know the way to Columbus, LOL! |
Me again,
I drove all the way there today as it's near impossible to get them on the phone..you only get an automated voice. It was closed! I assumed they would be open to the public even tho it was a holiday here. I'm going back sometime this week, ole van moaning and sputtering but I'll attempt it again. Ask all the proper questions and get the okay and will contact Kaye again. Marianne and the boys |
Thanks for the update marianne. bless you for sticking with this boy.
Please let me know if i can help by donating or posting to our site. |
Marianne? I just checked the petfinder on him and it said he was no longer at the shelter, that he was being fostered? I just didn't want you to drive all that way, maybe someone will answer the phone!
If there is anything I can do, please let me know! Colleen and Gucci George |
Hey thanks you guys for looking into it. It says he's in a foster home!! That's good at least he's out of that small cage which is no place for an ole timer to spend their days. I'll still make an attempt to check on to his status however. Thanks again!
Marianne and the boys |
Definitely let us know what you find out! |
Hi,
I'm going on Wed or Thursday to ask about his status in person and if the home will keep him until a permanent home is found or if it's just a short term reprieve to give him a break. I'll also ask about posting him on other sites with their permission. Marianne |
Any news? |
He has been relisted on Petfinder . Daisie posted him under rescue. I wonder if there are issues the shelter doesn't want to talk about, why else would his fosters give him up? Boy, this is so sad. |
Hi,
I had previously asked about cats and they said they didn't know how he would be. After the foster home I see no cats have been added. I suspect this is why. I made yet another trip on Thursday to see him and got sidetracked by a pregnant cat that was meowing outside my son's apartment. Not sure if it was owned by someone or not . I ended up going to the store to get cat food and water. My son said he will keep an eye out for this cat as he just moved into the building and is not sure if this is someone's pet. Once again I arrived at the shelter and it was closed due to the extra time I spent at my son's place. I will try again next week to go and talk to the staff. Marianne |
Does anyone know what happened to Rivera? Thanks, sue |
