I would think it would be ruined by the time it got there???? And how much does something like that cost (ballpark)? |

Don't know the cost but generally it is shipped either chilled or frozen. |
Please tell me that I'm not the only one who read Marilyn's post and DIDN'T think, just for a second, 'shaken, not stirred'... I know, it's early and I'm at my loopiest early. Vance |

It is early. I giggled just from being able to make a topic regarding this subject. I was looking at dogs and one person said they had a show dog who was 1 yr old that they'd let go to me for free if I paid for shipping and then they'd like their semen one time. I wasn't sure what all that was going to take on my part. I'm not interested in a dog "today" ...so I said no, but it got me thinking. |

At one year old the dog could be collected and frozen now, while with them and on their dime. I suppose the idea may be that they wait till they're ready to use it and get fresher stuff. But, if it's trans-atlantic, like Marilyn mentioned, it will probably be shipped frozen anyway, and the quality of the semen collected at a younger age would probably be superior. When I told my vet that I really like the way Bond is turning out and that I'd like to get him collected and frozen if he matures out the way he looks to be and clears all of the health testing, she told me not to wait, but to get him collected younger. If he doesn't, god forbid, pass his health clearances, the semen can always be dumped. A few extra bucks to be sure, but that way at least you've maximized your odds of having high quality semen on hand (like in other species, hm , the younger the dog, within reason and all else being equal, the more virile) In the case you're describing my thought is there would also be health testing you'd have to get done before the dog should be collected. Know this is all moot, and I'm glad you didn't take the dog because it sounds like too many strings to me for a pet owner to worry about, but maybe that's just me. Kristine |
It seemed like a good deal to me considering her show dogs are all 3000 US dollars BEFORE shipping (i'm learning the shipping is 600-750 euro). Then you'd still have to do all the testing, show, etc.. This dog is already great at agility and trained to truffle hunt, but she thought he'd be good with kids and the two people interested were only interested in making litters. She wanted to wait to collect (just a little longer). She said she doesn't care about the money (that I could even wait to pay her after we're settled into the new home!!) ..but she wanted him to be in the right home. Her next litter isn't until 2014. We have been friends for several months now, so I think a lot of it has to do with our close friendship/connection. Again, I still am not interested. I'd like to get settled into our new home, get lil J into school, and prepare for the holidays w/o any stress!!! (additional stresses). I wanted to know in case ever asked again when we are more serious about getting one. |
