Miley is at the anemic and needs a bone marrow biopsy

Hi Forum

I have not been around for a while but Miley is at pretty sick and I am worried and could use some help. In late July we found out that Miley was anemic and we have been seeing our vet and the last 3 blood test show no improvement. We are now looking to do a bone marrow biopsy. When I googled dog anemia I found this following thread:

Old English Sheepdogs, Irish Setters, and Cocker Spaniels are predisposed to immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, but all breeds are susceptible. Affected dogs are usually between 2 and 8 years of age; females outnumber males four to one.[/color]

I just am not sure what to ask the Vet. Our normal vet has referred us to an internist and we are very close to the UW Vet School.

I just don't know what to ask and am very worried.

Thanks

I can't speak highly enough of the UT vet school...Rosie saw three specialist while six others helped...cost was a lot less than specialist and helped understand Cushings and options. Vet schools are great!
Becky - PM Kristine about this. (Mad Dog)
She's by you and has worked with the UW vet school.
She may not be logged on here much, as she is very busy getting ready for the nationals next month. So she might not see this.

So sorry about the diagnosis. I haven't worked with it myself, but I know it unfortunately has a very poor prognosis. :(
Dawn:

We don't have a final diagnosis yet and are waiting on her bone marrow biopsy which she had today. I was just researching anything related to dog anemia and saw the correlation with the OES breed and wanted to see if anyone might know more about the subject.

I am hoping for a treatable diagnosis but it has me worried. I know she has really low red blood cell counts and they are not regenerating like they normally should. The tests today are trying to rule out some type of bone marrow cancer or an auto immune deficiency.

Thanks for the advice on PMing Kristine.

Oops - sorry - I read it as Miley has been dx with IMHA.
I think there is some research or data on it from the recent OESCA HRC surveys. The reading you did is correct - it is seen in OES more than the majority of breeds. :(
I'm really hoping this is not the case for Miley. :crossed: :crossed:
