Young, bigger males, especially, sometimes develop something called panosteitis, often referred to as "pano" for short, and some times known as growing pains. If that's what it is it might migrate from leg to leg. He may have one short bout, or it may re-occur on and off for a while. But he will outgrow it. It's not uncommon and it's nothing to worry about it. Kristine |
People get it too......and is painful. This is the time to be extra careful with running and jumping. |
Gabriel had pano, the limp would move from leg to leg at any given time. We switched him to adult food and the problem resolved quickly. |
Thanks everyone, I feel better. Not that I didn't trust my vet, he's AWESOME, I just never heard of pano or growing pains in a dog....and I've had dogs all my life (medium sized). Thanks again!!! :wa |
Basset hounds get pano too. None of mine have, but I hear about it popping up in young bassets. It seems an oxymoron saying "basset hound" and "long bones" in the same sentence though! |
Yes it happens, especially when they shoot up in leg early and fast. I'm with best dogs on this one, I know your man is only 4 months old now, but I would seriously consider taking him off puppy kibble and switching to an adult formula. You dont want to keep excelerating his growth fast at the moment, talk to your vet about it and see what they advise, but my recommendation is what-ever brand of puppy kibble you are giving him, switch to the same brand but in adult formula. Some go up in leg early and others much later, usually when they spurt early this happens and you dont want to keep pushing it with a puppy growth formula or you just exacerbate the problem. |
