Winston's First Roadtrip

We just got back from a 3-day, 1200 mile (2 10-hour driving days), 2 nights in a hotel wth Dexter and Winston. Dexter is an oldtimer at travel but this was Winston's first time to spend more than about 2 hours in the car in one day. They did great! No fidgeting or squabbles. We took breaks about every 2 hours. We tried using their seatbelts as harnesses on the first break; big mistake! Center pull from the middle of their back meant they should grunt into it and pull back! Dawn would have been proud!

Dexter is crate-free. We left Winston out of the crate last night and thought he did well; went to bed at about 11:00 and I woke him when I got up at 6:15. Then I stepped in the puddle of pee. Oh well, back to the crate for him.

My wife retires the end of September so they will become real road warriors then!

Sounds like fun! We do seatbelts attached to doggy seatbelts attached to harnesses for any trip longer than ten minutes, it helps them not to get knocked around in the car, especially Bailey since she loves to put her head out the window. It also prevents her from jumping out the window!
We do seatbelts too. Her harness hooks in the front attached to something that buckles into the seatbelt. When Chowder was a puppy her dad and I lived 3 hours apart so Chowder is a car champ on long rides!
Our guys seem to like their seatbelts. Dexter has fallen off the seat when we have left his off; he relies on it to hold him up when he lays down. We had to get a longer connector strap for Dex, the one that came with the Kurgo seatbelt wouldn't let him sit up very well when he got big.

They both wait to get in to have their seatbelts put on.
My dogs travel in their own van  with license plates "4BIGPAWS" and in their crates. They love their crates and seem very comfy in them. But, what seatbelts do you use for the regular car? I like that idea for our short trips around town.
We use Kurgo Tru-Fit harness type seat belts - http://www.kurgostore.com/tru-fit-smart ... c-buckles/

We got large, they adjust down small enough to fit Winston at 40 pounds (he's 50 pounds now) and big enough for Dex at about 80 pounds.

The connecting strap they come with is a little short for a big dog since it tends to go to the bottom of the seat belt and not ride high. We got an adjustable 18" strap for Dex and will get one for Winston soon.
Chowder wears a harness that clips in the front all the time, not a collar so we just needed something that connected her to the car. I can't find our exact one online but we got something like this http://www.maxandzoey.com/dog-seat-belt/navy-seat-belt-safety-leash-2068.html but it is very thick.
Hmmm....seat belts are a good idea, since our mastiff once fell out a car window (luckily we were only going 5 mph and she fell out onto grass)...ever since then I'm overly cautious about having windows down, and under NO circumstances do I let the girls stick their heads out the windows. A seat belt might ease my anxiety.
