This time we said only Tj our 8 yr old was going to go and we boarded the other 3 with people we know and trust dearly with the others 2nd day of vacation we get a call and say our little boy- Simon. is being a Hellion. started by knocking the potted plants off the deck and peeing on evrything. initially outside, but started peeing indoors. So they kenneled him. when they went to take him out of the kennel, he pee'd on them. his behavior was getting everyone worked up including the other dogs. They called and said the girls are welcome to stay but SIMON has to go. Well Simon and TJ dont get along all the time so we could not trust them both at the campsite, so I dropped TJ off at my parents and picked up Simon to come camping with us. Keep in mind we are camping 2 hours away from the boarders. I get Simon to the campsite and he is happy as a lark, Loving being the only dog and getting all the attention. 2 days later we get an urgent call from the boarder. they had taken the girls for a walk, put them in the air conditioned house, and went next door for supper. When they arrived home they went to let the dogs outside and found our Addie dead. My poor baby was five years old, short and stocky but full of life last week. A vet lives just doors away from the boarder and he came over and said it was as if she just went to sleep, no trauma, the other dogs were not nervous or agitated so she must not of put up a fuss. I am just at a loss. Some suggested an autopsy, and I would like to know, but seriously I cannot afford it and it would not bring her back. As i said i know and trust the boarders deeply. they would not let the dogs run rampant or off their leads, so it is hard to imagine she got into anything. Now the process of what to do as far as burying her or having her cremated....I made a coffin for her today, but the size of hole is going to be pretty large so I got to thinking cremation. any thoughts? this vacation really had a sucky ending! |

That is bad - for your family and the ones watching your dogs |
How terrible. I'm so sorry for your loss. We had our cat Pearl cremated this pass March and plan on cremating the dogs when it comes to their time. |
Oh I'm so sorry for your loss. What a horrible thing. We lost our first boy during a very long trip. We had him cremated where we were, then took his box on the dashboard for the rest of the trip. When we got home, we sprinkled some of his ashes in his favorite spots in the world and the rest are home in his box in our living room, just where he always liked to be. With us. |
PS We taped a picture of him on the outside of the box. |
Oh, how terrible!!! All the fears of boarding hit at once! My condolences to you. May Addie indeed just have "not woken up." As for what to do........We have buried everyone without a coffin. We feel they return to the earth more naturally without the box. I wrap them in cotten or wool if I can, someimes no wrapping. Unknown to me until recently, DH also puts their food bowl in with them. With MO and Harry nearing their end, we may have to change policies. Digging Jack's grave about killed us. The land was an orchard and when irrigated regularly, the soil was soft enough to dig. Now that it has dried out, it's like a brick for the first 20 inches. Either we move the last two to an area that receives moisture and will be diggable, or we cremate and bury the ashes with the other dogs or scatter. Just thinking of your vacation brings tears to my eyes. Good by Addie. |

Couldn't you get some volunteers from the rescues you've helped to help out? I know if I was in the area I'd definitely help! May that decision be a way off though! |
I suspect the cop next door would help as well, but we are not ones to ask for help. With DH facing more surgery, you know I'm keeping cremation in my mind......just in case it's needed if DH can't dig anymore. |

And just like I tell her, you know what, a lot of people enjoy helping and derive a lot of satisfaction from it! Someday, permit the cop next door to go to sleep proud and happy he was able to help his great neighbours next door! |
Thanks everyone. We decided to have Addie Cremated. Her urn will travel with us when we go camping. it has been difficult on all of us~~ family and the boarders. Other dogs definitely understand something is different. Everyone is in mourning |
so very sorry how sad for you and the family |
That is so so sad I'm sorry. |
Sorry this has happened |
So sorry for your loss. When Ziggi passes, I want to have her cremented and I am going to scatter her ashes in the forest where we walk every day - her favorite spot. |
How horrible for your family! We have cremated our loved ones. They sit in the living room with us. |
