Are they meeting face to face first? That is an aggressive position. Try for the nose/butt introduction. If growling continues, somebody is not happy around other dogs. You can try a quick correct letting her know you will not tolerate such behavior. She might be afraid of other dogs which is a socialization issue. I'd be thinking less aggression and more fear. |
We did try for a nose/butt introduction, she still wasn't too happy about it. She loves all the dogs from our obedience class, she never growled at any of them, and she likes to play with them when we take a break from class. It's just new dogs I guess. I don't know what changed, I thought taking her to obedience class would get her to be more socialized. |
She sounds like Simone, not a social butterfly. MO would have been very happy to be an only, stay at home dog. |

She took to Eevee right away when we got her, though, and she likes my dad's border collie, and she gets along great with all the dogs at class. She seems to like going out and being places. When we would pass other dogs on walks she would always wag her nub-tail and sniff at them and act all happy. It just seems weird to me that she doesn't like new dogs all of a sudden because she's been fine with pretty much every dog she's ever met until now. |
How old is Bailey? This sounds EXACTLY like Kenny....he was always the one the trainer had to pull away and scold for playing TOO much with other dogs. Now he growls more often than not and is not that playful at the dog park. You can check out my thread i just posted about second fear periods but that was just something i saw online. We've been distracting him with treats when we see other dogs and it seems to work pretty well but I feel like he loves playing so much that I dont just want to resign to making him an inside dog. Plus i live a very active life style, walking and being out and about. Not saying I am going to force Kenny to do it all but he used to beg to go with us and had so much fun so I dont know what the issue is all of a sudden. |
She's almost two now. Both of them did okay at petsmart today, she barked at some dogs, but no growling. |

I guess scolded was too tough of a word but basically we had to stop him playing because other people wanted to actually train their dogs. Not just have a day care atmosphere. Maybe it was the start of it but unsure. That's definitely in interesting thought that I didn't think of. Thanks |
