Tendonitis. It can linger in the background and come out and bite. Other "itis" is arthritis.....think about what you've eaten lately. A lot of tomato, potato meals can cause a flair up. Then there's carpal tunnel......might be early sign you are getting a closure around the nerves. Mine is just old fashion arthritis...pisser. |
I have a condition that causes inflamation of the muscles, I get this thumb pain sometimes too, but there is not way I am giving up tomatoes, dont' get them that often so guess I'll have to deal with it. |
I may be leaning towards the tendonitis. I do alot of paperwork where I work and alot of data entry. I guess the way this flared up surprised me. I was worried about gout also. I'm 62 so anything can happen now!!! I don't think it's carpal tunnel. My husband had both hands done a couple of years ago and I sat through the exams and what the symptoms are. Been favoring that thumb today. It's amazing because it hurts, you don't realize how much you use your thumbs all the time! |
My thoughts are gout or an infection that migrated into the joint. |
Could be slightly atypical gout. Any history of gout? High uric acid levels? EDIT: ^^^ What Dawn said. |
I suppose if I went to the doctor I could get my uric acid checked. No gout in family. Not as painful as yesterday, but still hurts. I work with nurses, so I'll have them look at it tomorrow. Have alot of data entry and alot of writing to do tomorrow at work, so I'm dreading Monday. I need my thumb the next few days since I'm under a deadline and no one else does my job. (I'm right handed and it's the thumb on my right hand) UGH!!! Downing iburprofen hopefully to take away some of the inflamation. I'm staying positive that it will be better tomorrow.....well, at least trying to talk myself into it! |
Maybe RSI Repetitive Strain Injury You could try a more ergonomic mouse such as a "3M Ergonomic Mouse" Not cheap but effective |
99% sure it is gout after talking to a nurse here at work this morning. Feels better everyday, but still alittle stiff and sore in the joint and swelling down a bit. |
The treatment for an acute gout attack is colchicine and NSAID. Colchicine used to be generic at less than 10 cents a pill but is now brand-name only as "Colchrys" at more than $5.00 a pill. Long story there. You take colchicine at a fairly low dose, typically 1 tiny tiny tablet a day and it will control the attacks. Once you have been attack free for a time (up to six months) your doctor should start you on a uric acid lowering agent which will need to be taken for life. For the first 6 months to a year you will need to continue the colchicine as lowering your uric acid levels and getting it all out of your system takes time and it can trigger a gout attack. Just because you're not having an acute attack, you're not out of the woods. You need to fix the uric acid levels. High uric acid levels permeate throughout your body and exist in all your tissues, and can continue to destroy your joints even when you aren't suffering an acute attack. First off you need to see a doctor who specializes in this kind of issue, that's usually an "endocrinologist". S/he will check your uric acid levels and direct your treatment to get you to be healthy for the rest of your life. She might want to stick a needle into your thumb joint to examine the fluid to look for uric acid crystals which is the definitive method for diagnosing gout. But either way, your uric acid levels should be below target, so unless the endo insists, it's probably not absolutely necessary, be sure to question the necessity. |
Quote: She might want to stick a needle into your thumb joint to examine the fluid to look for uric acid crystals which is the definitive method for diagnosing gout Thanks for the info Ron, should schedule a check up...think I am due for one now anyway. Not sure about the aspiration in my thumb....needles and I "do not" get along well! This is the only thing that prevented me from going into nursing!!!! |
