Good question. I don't know the answer. But this site asserts it knows, but I'm not so sure. http://www.differencebetween.net/miscel ... and-sport/ |
We had a sort of a debate at work about this issue as most of us play some sort of sport or game. If you look at the Olympics and they keep on changing things around and some groups think their sport should be included. You look at skiing for example. They class that as a sport but its a mode of transport & a activity so how is that a sport. |
Oh man, you really want to get into it - try Roller Derby. Entertainment, or sport? This last weekend we went and saw a banked track bout for TXRD, the original roller derby league that started the "resurgance" of modern roller derby. We were provided free tickets by the convention we were attending with our junior roller derby skaters (kids aged 10-16). It was an adult bout, on the banked track. There was pillow fighting, a penalty wheel, tug of war and brawling on the track. No strategy, not even good athletic skating. Our kids (and us) skate flat track roller derby, and it's VERY VERY athletic. No penalty wheel. No stupid antics on the track. We train constantly. And brawling and unsportsmanlike behavior gets you kicked out of not only a game, but likely shunned for life. But when people hear we skate Roller Derby - they think of the first kind. Our kids were offended. It was not a sport. It was sports entertainment perhaps. It was sad. For me, anything that takes serious athletic ability is a "sport". Like, you sweat and work your muscles and actually train. So even though golf is kind of leisurely, you do have to learn the swing, and there is strategy involved. Race car driving.... not so much. (Sorry Vance, maybe you can change my mind, lol). |
My younger son likes golf, his brother-in-law likes NASCAR. My older son is a cyclist. My older son likes to crank up a debate by saying golfers and certainly NASCAR drivers are not athletes as some proclaim them. Then someone throws in bowlers. What makes an athlete? |
Roz I have always wanted to watch a live roller derby but we just don't have it in the uk. I remember watching a film called roller ball |
Oh you have it in the UK. I've met the girls. I'll look them up and link you You'd love it. It's AWESOME. |
Roller Ball was on TV just this past weekend and I got to see it again! I love that movie! That and Slapshot! The debate about whether auto racing drivers are athletes all the time around here; usually sparked by a talk show radio host. They never seem to resolve that one and may never. All I know is if I find it entertaining and am willing to sit and watch it, what difference does it make? I will say that many of the current crop of athletes/sports stars get paid more then I think is worthy... Vance |
I think what counts is that you enjoy your sport or game you play and yes some of them are overpaid |
SamHeinous wrote: Race car driving.... not so much. (Sorry Vance, maybe you can change my mind, lol). I think the only race car driving which is a sport are the rally drivers who drive 80mph through a narrow unpaved road. Sliding the car into turns, not just a constant left turn for 200 plus laps! But i only play hockey, so what do i know? most people think its just boxing on ice! i have a feeling you would love the jerseys we have, they are tuxedos. |
I do agree that the only driver who should be classed as real athletes would be the rally guys and even more over, those who drive in races like the Baja 1000 and Dakar Ralley. Those guys can really take a beating and must be pretty darn fit to do it. But I'm not gonna try to convince anyone to say one way or the other. I think Parwaz is right on the level of enjoyment you get out of it. Vance |
Summary from the difference between website 1. Sport involves individual skills. In game, it is the collective responsibility of a team 2. Sport is based on physical energy and game based on mental strength. 3. Game relies on strategy, sport is based on individual performances and luck. 4. Sport is an activity or activities where the material capabilities of the sportsperson are looked upon. It is the entire performance of the players that determines the winner in a game. I don't totally agree, but I agree with most of it. Baseball, soccer, football are both sports and games. A sport can be a game, but game isn't always a sport? A game of chess.... |
So what if you get a sport with all these in one. Also another things I don't get as well when a group or certain countries say this is a world series or the best in the world but they only play or just someone else does that sport or don't invite other countries. Like Baseball world series same as hockey also in the Uk at snooker they were all from the UK & how is that the best in the world. Same as Rugby League & so on. Why don't they just say the best of our sport. Soccer/football you can say world cup because everyone plays that sport |
...and the Mr./Miss Universe contests never seem to have anyone from outside a few of the continents on this planet too. What's up with that? |
