Im somewhat hesitant to NOT leave her waterbowl down all day, but she just seems to pee randomly....like, just after i took her down...i dont think she empties her bladder all of the way.. there is nothing medically wrong with her.... we go for a long walk in the morning (6 am) and a long walk in the evening (630 pm)..all other times, she is inside... IF i decide to schedule her water amounts, what would be the correct TOTAL amount for her a day...she weighs 35 lbs... |

I don't have "amounts" so hopefully someone will give you an answer, but for me... I let them tell me when they want water. Due to the beards ...I just put an inch or so of water in at a time in a large stainless steel bowl. They drink just that and WILL learn to just stand there, shake that butt, or do circles ...if they want more. Water after breakfast, some time before noon ...some time before dinner. after dinner a few times ..........and that's all Yuki has ever gotten her entire life. Allows for good pee control!! Well she asks for it more now [past several months] but she's agitated over something (allergies) so she tries to cope I think... |
I was warned to allow the puppy to drink as much as she wants as withholding water can cause UTI issues. So we did that and she slowed down. Every now and again I have to give a stern 'EASY!' and she'll back off for a while. Vance |
We started Benson off with a no-spill water bowl. Problem was, when she had enough to drink, the bowl became a toy. Pick it up, flip it over, and the bowl - with the remaining water all over the floor - became much more fun. We had to change to something a little sturdier. Fortunately, we are home all day, so she just tells us when she's thirsty. We hear a "clink" and see this: We give her about 16 oz at a time, and she rarely drinks it all at once, even in this heat. You don't say where you are, but if you are in the middle of all this heat, 2 large bowls a day, especially for an active puppy, doesn't sound unreasonable to me. Vance's suggestion of asking her to take it easy will also help you decide if she's drinking that much because she's really thirsty, or because it's something to do and she doesn't realize she can stop before the bowl is empty. Good luck! |
I have two big bowls sitting out for Bailey and Eevee together, Bailey only drinks about half a bowl per day, Eevee drinks the other bowl and a half and then some, I have to fill those bowls up twice a day. Eevee has always drank a lot. |
i normally would just let her have at it but potty training in the hi rise has its issues....i am still taking her out every hour-ish...and even then, she is peeing inside...grrrr.... and she likes to ring the bell on the way IN for her cookie instead of on the way out to go.... |
Darcy, I don't know the answer to your question. But, when Hannah was a puppy she was a voracious water drinker. Our vet advised us that she wasn't getting enough moisture in her food. So we had to add moist food to her dry food. Hope that helps. Lola sure is a precious beauty. We need more pics. Isn't there some rule about any post being made by a puppy owner must include pics? |
Chowder was peeing in her sleep randomly 3 times over 2 weeks so the vet had us measure how much water she was drinking. I think this was around 6-8 months. 8+ cups a day!!! It was a lot according to the vet but they said let her drink unless we weren't going to be around to take her out. It lead to testing her urine and other things, though nothing came of it. She still drinks a lot though no where near as much. |

Have you had her checked for a UTI? Eevee had one and it caused her to piddle on the floor all the time when we were first trying to housetrain her. Out every hour and still piddling sounds like an awful lot. |

Our dogs have always had "free" usage of water. We have bowls around the garden and indoors. Sprocket likes his "high rise" bowl at the moment-the bird bath! He used water cans, buckets the bowl that catches the drip from a leaky pipe.x |

Langley took advantage a well, about the cookie too. Hahaha Tiggy still does. She rings her door bell, goes outside, looks at the sky then comes back in and runs to the pantry and does the cookie dance.............Like "how clever am I? I asked to go out!!!" I always say but you didn't DO anything and she looks at me like I'm mad. I hope Lola is not taking after Tiggy. It took forever to potty train Tiggy. It's like there's no in between, her bladder is either not full or it's full NOW. There's no in between and no time for waiting. We're mostly in a routine now but I dread wet weather because Tiggy hates to go out in the rain and will wait and wait and then need to go just when we're not in the room to let her out. |
lola went to the vet last week...all is good..no uti... panda used to empty her bladder on every walk....lola does not...so im thinking scheduled water breaks may help with the potty training.... 2 cups of water am, 2 cups of water mid morning, 2 cups of water lunch, 2 cups of water mid afternoon, 2 cups of water dinner, 2 cups of water 7 pm... does that sound like enough? 12 cups of water? |
sounds like plenty. |
Carley wants to drink all of her water at once. I guess she thinks she will never get any more. We just keep her bowl filled most of the time. I am better at checking it than Dale is. We have to tell her to stop and not drink so much sometimes because she will throw it up if she drinks too fast. We had to get her special food when she was younger because she did not chew it she just swallowed it whole. I think she is a little greedy. There is not even another dog to steal her food or water. She wasn't that hard to potty train though. Bonnie/Carley's Mom |

Lacy does that, but I've chalked it up to her getting so excited that I'm about to let her out of the crate, or out the back door. When do you start worrying about the piddle? |
At 9 months Sprocket will run around widling on the floor over your feet if he hasn't been out for a while and you have just come home or someone comes round. When we get home from shopping it's a challenge to see if we can get back door open and go outside with him before we get wet feet. He is getting better!.We hardly had any proper accidents indoors though, right from the start. It was the hourly garden trip,on waking, after meals or after a bit of play time.x |
We have a big crock and a gallon fountain for the dogs. Seeing all the other dogs are drinking too - I have it out 24/7. Especially needed with Simon before he died - he needed to drink large amounts of water to keep his kidney functions going. Bond was originally crated for overnights and when Todd slept during the day - so no water then. But that was only until about 5 months or a bit younger - then he was gated on the porch with other dogs - and where the crock dish is. Chewie and Bond were super easy to potty train, and both had pretty much full access to water when they were little. Good luck! |

We didn't notice until one day I was outside with her and she kept squatting every few minutes and whining, if it gets that bad you will definitely notice. It wouldn't hurt to get her checked for one, better to catch it before it gets so bad. Our vet said Eevee is extra susceptible to utis because she's got hairs growing out of her lady parts, we have to keep them trimmed now. Eevee is also an excited/nervous piddler, if she plays too rough with Bailey she piddles, when she goes to the vet she piddles, she used to piddle at obedience class, she piddles if I get between her and Bailey's dinner, and she piddles if I tug on her collar to get her to go out when she's being stubborn. Just watch her behavior before it happens, if she seems extra excited or nervous, that's probably all it is. We've become very careful about how we do things with Eevee in hopes of saving the carpet. |
