Is the right side the side that faces me when I'm holding the knitting? Say I am in the knitting position, needle with stitches in left hand. The pattern side is facing me (or you could say it is on the outside). Is that the right side and I should start the pattern rows? |

Where did Leslie and Ginny go when we really need them? If I'm understanding what you're saying, you're working a straight garter stitch all the way across for the border. if so, it should be the same on both sides of the blanket until the stockinette/pattern stitches begin. Then you'd start working with the stitches on the needle in your left hand and the end that your cast-on tail is at the start of your next row. (If you did a knit-on type of cast on, you should still be able to look closely and see where you started knitting originally) The right side of the work typically faces you when you start a pattern row and are holding the stitches this way. Sorry, I'm not too good at explaining in writing but could definitely show you. I have something on the needles for Jill's baby and the poor boy will be in grad school before I get that done the way it's going! |
I knit left handed so all back to front-does'nt make any difference 'cept when follow pattern as it is the left front of a cardy becomes the right front. On my knitting, the attern row is the one facing you when going to do say the first row of patern, just on opposite needle. If you have a cast on tail it will be at your elbow end of needle on your left needle(just had to think backwards) and pattern facing you.x |
I totally forgot about lefties! Thought about English vs. Continental style and whether that would make a difference and if a tailed vs. untailed cast-on would make a difference. But not the left handed possibility... |
Nita, I'm halfway through the dang blanket! I miscounted on the garter rows and did a pattern section that ended up on the wrong side. So I ripped out the pattern rows and garter rows, increased a few stitches, and now I'm ready to start the pattern section. The pattern is row 1: knit row 2: purl row 3: k2 tog, you row 4: purl. So as the project is now, the "public side" or "right side" is facing me on the needles. The stockinette pattern is facing me. Intuition tells me to start the pattern but I want to make sure I'm correct. |
Without seeing the work or the pattern, I would say you are right starting there. Just do a few stitches and see how it looks. If unsure, I'd put a removable stitch marker or safety pin through the stitch that you're starting on. That way, if you have to frog (rip-it!) stitches out, you'll know where to come back to. Just be sure you don't knit in something that can't be removed! Why not show us a picture??? |
I usually make a habit of making the knit row the 'right-side'. Do you use placement markers? If the k2 is every third row, that should tell you where you are. It is helpful to keep a safety pin on the right-side as well, just so you know where you are. Good luck! |
I think we are overthinking. Here is a pic: Is this the "right" side? This is the side that would be face-up. |
Yep, you have it!!! Garter stitch (purl) on your straight rows and stockinette (knit) stitches are correct with the right side up. Definitely use the stitch markers. You can never have too many safety nets! |
You could also walk into a knitting shop and they will help you. Been there, done that. |
It's like you guys are speaking a different language... |
snazzierella wrote: It's like you guys are speaking a different language... Aw, that's nothing! It DOES get worse as the difficulty of the pattern increases. |

Problem solved. I need to learn to trust my intuition. |
Hey, after ripping once, it IS easier to at least ask, right?? |
Mmmm, everyone forgets us lefties!!!! Have just finished my 50's "2tone wavy"jumper for customer and back on to son-in-laws jumper-black!!Yuk.x |
HahahaHA! Since you're "halfway done" you could just do it whichever way. If you got it right, YAY! If you got it wrong, it's "reversible". LOL |
