Rob, we worked Caitlyn off puppy blend about nine months. She was far more interested in what her big sis was eating so we just slowly took her over to the adult blend. We're strictly feeding ProPlan Lamb & Rice Shredded Blend. Vance |
Benson just turned a year old in mid-June. We just started mixing adult in with her puppy food about a week ago. |
Our breeder and another friend, both who have been breeding, showing and judging OES since the late 1960's, recommend puppy food until their long bones and growth plates are finished which is 12-18 months. Another friend who has done the same with Great Danes since the 1960's and been into OES for about 20 years says large breed "all ages" food is sufficient. Pretty big difference in calorie count between puppy and "all ages" food, protein and fat is about the same. |
Based primarily on performance dog recommendations for large breeds, the trend is to stop puppy food earlier than previously recommended. 6 yrs ago it was about at 8 months when I switched Chewie off of puppy food. 3 yrs ago with our big boned lab Biscuit we did the same. For Bond we switched right before he turned 6 months. He's 9 months now. |
We have always switchd our oes to large breed junior kibble at around 6 month and then on to adult food at about 12-18 months depending on how they are growing. I tend to think it can't hurt to stay on a junior kibble a bit to long rather than rushing to adult as soon as possible.x |
Our breeder told us she spoke to the people at James Wellbeloved who told her to switch to adult food at 6 months. we switched to royal canin though and so we were on junior food for a while, we had to switch to sensitive food though so George has been on that for a couple of months. |
We had switched Dahlia to adult food around 6 months as well. |
