Back in March, Chewie and I entered our 3rd CAT, in hopes of getting his final Q run and earning his title. He did do it , and I was waiting on the photographer's photos to post it all. Then I had to scan them in...guess I got distracted. The CAT (Coursing Ability Test) is lure coursing for non-sighthound dogs. It is a whole lot of fun! This is Chewie at the startline: Chewie is intent on the lure (white baggies on the cable/track)...and I am watching for the signal to release him. He covered the 600 yard course in 41.28 seconds...and did looking like this: After his successful run, we went over to the award area, and got our photo taken. I am holding his 3rd orange qualifying ribbon, and Chewie has his title medal around his neck. It's not fully confirmed, but we are pretty sure he is the 1st OES to be awarded the coursing title (CA). This is a new sport from AKC for the non-sighthound breeds, and I really love it. The dogs enjoy it SO much...it's just amazing to watch all the dogs, big to little, do this. So now Chewie is (for his AKC titles) as of March 31, 2012 : Ch Masquerade Alice Acres Madness CD RAE OAP OJP NF CA Key for AKC: CD - companion dog - obedience RAE - rally advanced excellent combined title OAP, OJP, NFP - agility titles And also in: UKC - CH and UWPCH (weight pull CH) AHBA - HCTs (herding capability-sheep) NADSR - WPCH (weight pull CH) CPE - agility titles, and I don't know the abbreviations! WOW!!!!! Sorry labtop users but I had to put it full size because it is amazing! |
nice very nice |
Chewie go in for yoga, that's quite an extension! |
Wow, that is REALLY big. I love Lois's pictures, she catches the action and expression of her subjects really well. The hair detail is my favorite part - how it swirls and shifts. |
Awesome!!!!! Kristine |
Awesome!!!! Cindy |
WOW Chewie??? YOU are remarkable!!!!!! |
bond james bond's older brother. chewie da magnificent. bet he wasn't far off the afghan times. |
Chewie the Wonder OES strikes again! Congratulations, you guys- I think there must be nothing Chewie can't do when you two set your minds to it! So here's my question (since I have puppy fever) with so many accomplishments, WHY hasn't Chewie sired a litter?! I'd think those would be some outstanding puppies! |
Allison, you stole the words out of my mouth. Go Chewie |
Wow great job Chewie!! Are we surprised? Not really, Chewie can do anything! So this lure-coursing, it's chasing after a lure zipped along a wire, like Greyhounds chasing the "rabbit" on a dog course? Is it judged solely on time completed? |
According to the AKC's Title By Breed page, http://www.akc.org/pdfs/events/coursing_ability_test/TitlesByBreed.pdf there are no OES listed. So they probably haven't updated it yet with Chewie's name so surely he would be the first and currently only OES with the title. WAY TO GO CHEWIE AND DAWN!!!! Vance |

Yes - it's run the same as the greyhounds and other sighthounds. It's been tamed down a bit for non-sighthound dogs - less sharp corners, no crossing the path, etc. If you go on the link, it explains it more fully. Only clubs who are licensed to hold "real" lure coursing events can host these. Our course was a big squished oval shape - kind of kidney shaped. The field we ran in is L-shaped, so it fit the space well. It's judged more like a herding test - as they want sustained interest. There is a time component, but it's quite generous. If the dog is moving steadily along, they can pass. But the fun ones to watch are the ones in high gear - no matter what breed! Some of the little dudes were flying...it is horribly addicting to watch!! I highly recommend this to anyone with a dog that enjoys a good game of chase; you and your dog will be hooked! David - I wonder if you have this in Canada yet? It's brand new here, less than a year old program. |

Vance I looked - it's called Titles By Breed in 2011 - and we didn't finish until March 2012...so nope, we weren't on the list yet. We had 2 legs, but needed to wait for spring in MN to have another event to run in. Our 1st weekend (and 2 legs) was on Halloween weekend last fall. And I do know there is at least one other dog out in CA who has since done it and titled as well. |
Congratulations!!! Love that photo but I really like the one of you both at the start line, two very intent people ready for action. And Dawn I know you've made noises about good genes but really can you start to look your age just a little bit? You look way too young to be a grandma in that photo. I think I might get to disliking you if you're not careful |

Seriously - it's just good genes! I wear no makeup, no special soaps or creams...so I can take no credit. And I just keep moving!...maybe afraid if I stop I'll never restart? |
Go CHEWIE!!! |
GO CHEWIE!!! Awesome photos. I love both of them. The intensity at the start line and the flying sheepie... |
