Egads!!! Noooo Panda...not you again! I grumble and mumble to myself that once again it is THIS dog and not the other two that has something stuck between his teeth! The day after surgery....aka GROOMING...after the 400 dollar vet bill...sniff sniff...he picked up a Gatorade plastic bottle cap my son had left on the computer table. I see Panda chewing it frantically, I managed to pick up the remnants of the destroyed bottle cap. The cap is made of very hard plastic and I suspect a piece is lodged in Panda's back teeth. I saw Panda pawing his face and smacking his lips. I can hear the thing clicking inside his mouth. The clicking stopped and I was frantic he swallowed the piece. Nope ...everyonce in a while I can hear the clicking noise and in my "mother bear mode" and great love for my boy I even stuck my hand in Panda's mouth!!! I can't see where it's stuck..but am almost sure it's still there. For days I've stuck my fingers in the sides of his mouth and tried to feel his gums and teeth. Unbelievably he's allowed me to do this!!! Still...can't see it as I'm sideways and for safety sake will not do it while standing/sitting in front of him. Just too risky with my face infront of his like that if he gets too stressed. He doesn't appear in pain but seems very sad. :O( He's been that way since he came home however with his shaved body...made him feel small I think. It may be it's no longer there but he has cut his gums. I just don't know!!! Whatever happened ...it's way in the back...if it's there it's stuck between his back teeth. I can't ask my son for assistance or any one else for that matter to hold his mouth open....I know Panda would freak out. Anything he views as aggression towards him and I can tell by his body stance that he's becoming stressed. Okay I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I let this go any longer, I borrow money, call the vet....make an appt for 10 am tomorrow for another bout of sedation. I tell Panda no matter what ....I still love him. Thanks for allowing me to vent. The money isn't the most important fact that I'm stressing over...poor Panda..more sedation Marianne |
|
Marianne, I know exactly how you feel! It's the same way I feel when Belle "decides" to have another medical issue.
Vent away. Give Panda a kiss on the nose from me. I'll be thinking 'bout you guys. Jil |
Poor Panda, Poor Marianne!!!! Let us know how it "comes out" |
Poor guy, if it feels anything like a popcorn shell in the teeth....yuck. It enough to drive anyone insane. Hopefully he will just let the vet pull it out and not charge you anything...given the circumstances, and you were just there and paid them so much already. Some vets can be nice...for your sake I hope this is the case.
If it's anything like our house by the time you get there the problem is gone |
Bless both your little hearts!! That's just awful!! I do hope you'll have good results at the vet's office...and yes, may he have mercy and charge less than usual!!
Belly rubs for your boys! |
You could try giving him some ice cubes to munch on first? The chewing might dislodge it, the ice will numb it and bring down swelling of the gums which may be holding the peice of plastic in tighter as it swells. |
I just realized what time you posted, you've probably already gone to the vet.... my internet was down all night last night and half of today so I think I missed quite a bit... sorry.
I hope the vet visit goes well / went well, please let us know how it went! |
Hi,
Aww you guys are wonderful! Thanks for all the kind words! Well took Panda in and although I knew I would be getting the male vet.. ( The office I use has three vets, two are female) didn't figure it mattered since he would be under sedation. Actually worked out well as we walked into the examining room...vet sits on the examining stool and proceeds to open Panda's mouth! I was ahhh arggg ummm you shouldn't do that...Before I could get out the mumble of words..vet pops it out!! A nice bright orange plastic crown on Panda's tooth..aka the remains of the bottle cap! The vet says I should further check his mouth...I say..ahhhh urrrr noooo doooon't...but he proceeds to try to stick his fingers in .. I hear snap snap...egads..I'm praying the vet will be able to continue to work until retirement. Vet then says...hmm it's always best to have him sedated in the future for things like this. Luckily, the vet was able to get hands out quick enough and didn't suffer a bite. Whew! I woulda felt awful and tried to warn him that it may possibly happen - even has it posted on his chart and Panda was scheduled for sedation. Still I'm really happy he didn't have to have it - total bill only came to 40 dollars unlike the 150 or more I was expecting. So it ended well!! No sedation, vet didn't get bit, and I even brought along the rest of the bottle cap and was able to piece it all (including the one the vet popped off from Panda's tooth) and YIPIIIII it was all there!!! Does the happy dance Willow, I liked your idea of the ice cube..thanks, handy to know a tidbit like that in case my three furballs do something like this. Marianne |
Huzzah!!!!

WONDERFUL!!! |
Great news! :):) |
So glad to hear the good news!
Chris |
so glad the story ended well.
And now you get to have a nice break from accidents and excitement for a while...you've had your bad luck run for the whole year! |
YAHHHHZOOOTTTIE!! |
WooHoo!!!!! |
Thanks again everyone!
Lets hope Panda doesn't get into anything else ....he's making me age before my time. Whazzat? Animals lower your blood pressure? Merlin and Blue, I swear are smirking and have that angelic look in their eyes. I know better...they've probably been up to something too..but least with them, I can groom them and stick my fingers in their mouth if there were ever an emergency. It was nice too that the vet petted Panda afterwards and gave him a cookie. He did say that you can tell the way he reacted he was not an aggressive or vicious dog but he was scared. Panda gave the vet lots of doggie kisses immediately after as way of making amends. Overall the experience was (good)? not sure if that's the right word...as Panda didn't mind going to the vet office and greeted everyone. This was only days after he was sedated. That's a really positive thing as he didn't stress being in the building. Another huge accomplishment since his arrival last year. We even stayed a few mins after the incident so we could leave on a postive note and Panda filled up on treats. I had starved him since the night before as he was scheduled for sedation. He really appreciated the treats from everyone!!! >>Now covers mouth and mumbles apology for yet another long winded story. Marianne and the boys |
Sounds like Panda is making some progress Maybe next time he has a vet visit he'll be more calm(crossing fingers) |
Tasker suffers from VET terror d/t some pretty unpleasant Vet visits in the past. One thing I have done is to make an appointment for him to be seen when there wasn't anything that needed to be done. This way he has had some "good" experiences as well. Doesn't really cost alot for a "well baby visit" and in the long run helps. |
Hey, this is a great story! I feel very yucky every time I have to put my hand inside Lennon or Sofa's mouth to get something they've been chewing... but it's for the love of them, right?
It's really nice to hear that Panda is making such a great progress at the vet's office. Keep up the good work!! |
How come is it that the worse these babies are the better we love them? Who would have believed a year ago that Panda would allow a man to stick his fingers in Panda's mouth and come out with all fingers intact. It goes to show what a year of love and security will do. You think he has gone as far as he can go and then you find he has taken another baby step.
Hooray for Panda for meeting another challenge and overcoming it. Cookies and belly rubs all around! |
