The only worry I have is because this is his 2nd time this month. He had it about 2 weeks ago but that was right after i tried added a seaweed additive to his food so i thought it was that. Should i be worried? Is a vet trip warranted? |

Oh...his stool has been solid ever since we fasted him and went bland for about a day or 2 and then back on regular food for over a week. This was the first bad time |
I know with our Zoey, one slice of pepperoni will create nine kinds of trouble with her tummy. I joke to not even opening the package if she's in the kitchen. We've been pretty luck with Caitlyn - we've had pretty good BMs with her but we are careful not to feed her too much people food or too many treats, much Jen's dismay... I'd suggest watch the next couple BMs and maybe either cut back on the treats or switch to a biscuit style treat, versus something that may be greasy, i.e. Pupperonis. That's Caitlyn's 'show treats' and we use them very sparingly. Vance |
Good advice! I was only feeding him natural dog biscuits...the good kind but it's half peanut butter solos and half veggies and stuff. And I think peanut butter can get a poor reaction at times too. Maybe a combo...I'm going to fast him for this meal and see how he reacts to an early dinner. I'm also starting to think he has the most unstable stomach I've ever seen haha. I just dont think he's good with non dog food or anything greasy. |
Fasting a meal or two is a good idea. I like to go two meals. Then start back with bland flood.....I do like rice, just plain rice initially. Then add a bit ---about 2 ounces of cooked ground meat. When the poop firms back up, slowly incorporate kibbles back in. In all it is close to a week's effort. He won't die of starvation, though he may beg to differ. Yeah, he may be a tender tummy dog who cannot take greasy/fatty foods. If this tenderness continues, discuss with vet possibly adding a Pepcid AC to his daily regime. Don't discount summer tummies. Excessive heat puts them off food and if forced to eat, say with an extra good yummer, problems may arise. Just as we don't want heavy meals in summer, neither do the dogs. Mine always get a reduction in kibble. |
All very good advice! Thank you guys! |
If he went solid after the seaweed, and then started up again after the pepperoni, then I wouldn't think you need to rush off to the vet. Many of these dogs have very sensitive tummies - mine included. ANYTHING out of the ordinary with her, and it's a poop canon. It's taken me MONTHS to find a treat she can tolerate. She does well on Salmon. Probably just a little upset tummy |
Some dogs have stomachs of steel, others very sensitive, many are in between. We are fortunate to have good guts here. Personally, I often use just kibble here as a treat for training. Mine are all food focused. If you need something more, how about going with the lean cooked version of the protein source in the kibble you currently feed? Might help you to avoid stomach upsets all together. And we do just the opposite. Mine are more active in the summer so need more calories to maintain an ideal weight. We decrease in the winter months so they don't gain. |
With regards for meal time, what is Kenny's regular schedule? I know that with ours, I feed them both at 6AM and again at 6PM. Anything more than an hour off from that and they get cranky. They've gotten to where they know what 6 o'clock is. Vance |
Generally about 8ish and 6ish He doesnt seem to be affected by this in the past though so not sure. |
I'd say the pepperoni too. Our 1st OES Oliver couldn't tolerate any human leftovers that had tomato in it...Todd was a slow learner with that one! After HE had to do the rear end cleanups and the carpet, that changed real fast. Bond is good for almost everything, but I had some tripe strips for training treats - just one strip over the course of an evening of class results in diarrhea all the next day. Doesn't affect Chewie at ALL, but after 2 consecutive events on Thursdays, after classes Wednesday evening...I learned, no more for him. |
I'm anxious to hear what the vet says. Poor Jake had diarrhea his whole life since he was 7 weeks old. He started out with colitis and it changed to IBD last year at 6 years old.. I would recommend salmon treats or his normal kibble. |
