Some details can be found at this link. http://www.fetchgatefarm.com/ Or for more information call (607) 835-6584. I've never heard of this event and have no idea what it entails, but I saw it on the news this morning and thought I'd post it up in case someone from this area would like to check it out. |

Go if you can. Fascinating. No OES, but the BCs are just amazing. Each Labor Day weekend Rifle Colorado has a major herding dog competition, you need to reserve motel rooms a year in advace...it is that popular. Friends of my fathers were some of the first Greek sheep ranchers in the area and until the kids sold out a few years ago were integral to the event. |
Susan, I really didn't look at the website in depth. Does it say somewhere in there what breeds of dogs will be there? I thought maybe Jonsey (Diane, Benson's mom) would be interested in it. |
Several mentions on Border Collies. They comprise the vast majority of herding trials dogs. Sometimes an Aussies sneaks in. No OES, not the same league as these guys. It would be wonderful to have an oes trained to the whistles. Also OES aren't as agile....they would be fun bumbling about out there though. |

Now, the whole big outrun, whistle thing, not so much Sounds like a fun event. Will mention it to my mom and see if she can be talked into taking my niece. Bet she would would fascinated. Kristine |
Just my luck. I'm working all weekend and into the week. Hopefully next year! |
Kristine, do your OES control through "eye" and "ear" movement? Do they get down in the crouch and crawl forward? If so, I'll enter them in Rifle show!! What a treat that would be. Hey, if Babe the Pig can do it!! Yes, OES can be very agile and speedy. |
Ear movement? Who can tell, with all that hair? The puppies do that creepy, crawly border collie thing when playing with each other, one...carefully...crouched...step at a time...all the while staring each other down, daring each other to move, more so than any other OES I've ever known. It's hilarious. Who knows what they'd do with sheep? Becky'd probably pee herself with excitement, while Luna tried to figure out how to ride them Your average OES doesn't have the same working style as a BC, no. And it would be a rare OES, indeed, who could match most BCs on a long outrun. But that doesn't mean they aren't agile, or that they're clumsy. Or at least not the smaller, nicely put together ones. totally agree re: the smaller size OES........amazing agility. MO was rabbits worst enemy here....she could run them down. Pity she never got to herd anything larger. I see bits of wishful thinking now, "I used to run with the wind........". No way in the universe Jack could ever do that, he is/was too big boned and tall. Ear flicks would be difficult to discern, |
