Put that choke collar up high, not around lower throat. It needs to be just under jaw with top just behind the ears. The correction is quick snap, not a prolonged tug, then release. Continually choking lower down won't work as that's a major mass for the dog. Correct-release-and change direction (if walking). Yeah, you'll be going in circles for awhile. |
Susan is right about the placement - that will make ALL the difference! |
I bought a slip lead for bloo, but to be honest i dont like it. As he pulls so bad i cant release the lead as hes pulling. So he chokes I just work with cannycollar . Most times hes on extender or off lead as we just walk the cutthroughs. As i havent road walked him for months he will pull me over when i do, so i gotta get the canny collar ready LOL |
Hello. I use a slip lead on Sprocket when we go to training class and to walk along the road to the field where he runs about. Yesterday I tried him on just a normal lead attatched to his collar and he hardly pulled and I was able to correct him ok. For our last 2 Sheepies I used a halti and have used it on Sprocket when going to a heavy poplated place so that I am in complete control-husband wants him to walk on just a lead-hence the slip lead training. I does seem to be working.x |
http://www.petsmart.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=collar&origkw=collar&sr=1 Our trainer recommended an alternative training collar, part of the collar is chain and the rest is a flat nylon collar, you can adjust it so that it will not choke the dog but can still use for leash training and other training. It is also really easy to grab if the dog is overly excited and needs a time out. We put it up around the dogs ears (like described in previous posts) and it provides feedback to the dog when they pull. It works much much better than the old slip collar we had (it just made the dog choke himself). When fitted properly it will not choke the dog and will stay put higher up on the neck. I believe Petland and Petsmart carry them but for the longest time they were only available through our local humane society (these are the collars they feel are the most humane for training purposes). Just make sure it is fitted the right way or your dog may slip it off and eat it (our did, with a regular buckle collar AND a training collar). |
Something like this, ours has less chain and more nylon but this is the basic idea. |
She seems to be doing better at least a little with it, I think it's more that she isn't pulling anymore than the collar, she's a lot more focused on me so she hasn't been pulling. I was having the same problem Sam did with Bloo, Eevee would continue to pull so I couldn't release it. Bailey is still a puller, not so much at class, mostly outside and around squirrels, things like that, and I do use a canny collar with her when we go for walks since it keeps her under control so well. At class though they aren't pulling anymore so there's not much point in leaving the slip collar on, but they want us to have them on so whatever. |
What is a "canny collar"? The location of the slip lead or choke collar should be up high or they will choke with it. Problem is, it doesn't stay up high. I have a special collar I got at my training camp which snaps around and stay high. Or you can try a gentle leader. |
This is the canny collar: https://www.cannyco.us/ There's a collar on it which goes around the neck like normal, then there's the piece that attaches to the leash that goes around their nose/mouth so when she pulls, it makes her bend her head down, which she doesn't like, so she stops pulling! I love it Sam showed it to me. |
