Sledding

They train at cannock chase for the sledding teams.

I was wondering....Should i join?

It would be full of huskies but im sure bloo could be just as good...
He has the strength and speed, but i dont think hed be able to run for so long without a break.

Or even better, we could make a UK sheepdog sledding team! We could knock out all them husky teams!
:yay:
Im going to research the club, think bloo would love it. He loves pulling me and he loves running. So it would be perfect...

Dawn's Chewie does this. I'm sure she could give you some GREAT pointers.

Should the UK team feel at least obligated to use native dogs, especially one names AFTER the country!?!

Sure he can. And though he may never rival the stamina of your average husky type dog, it's something you build up gradually and he'll probably surprise you. Then again, and I forget how old he is, don't go crazy till he's 18-24 mos old. His body needs to mature a bit first.

Perhaps finally something that can take care of his excess energy?

It's an excellent sport activity., Especially when you get a group, so each pulls relatively little weight and it's a glorified run for fun...they LOVE it! And for the human it's addicting as well. We use a 3 wheel cart when there is no snow (which would be the case a lot for you in the UK a lot, I would guess), and it's still a blast!! :D :D

It's all about conditioning and gradually building endurance. The running parts look fantastic, but in reality they use a long strided trot for the bulk of the time and distance. It's very energy efficient and eats up the distance well.

Here's a carting video from this past spring (we had no real snow all last winter) :(

sorry - the embed is messed up - blips to the wrong video...
If he's old enough, join. I'm sure other breeds will be interested. If he can't stay up with the huskies, perhaps some of the other breeds' owner might be interested in forming a mixed dog team. Years ago when Sonja ran, I remember many mixed and off breed teams........the Irish Setters were lovely, but not competitive..but who cared. The standard poodles were a riot! And of course the mix and match teams out for a good time.
